Ian Poulter: Huge Ryder Cup Star who Always Delivered

Here are some details about his professional career of ‘The Postman’ as he enters the twilight of his career.

Ian Poulter: Professional Record

Poulter was born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire in January 1976 and turned professional at the age of 20. He won his first pro event on the Challenge Tour three years later at the Open de Cote d’Ivoire and qualified for a place on the European Tour for the following year.

Poulter took to the step up like a duck to water and was crowned Henry Cotton Rookie of The Year in 2000 after he picked up his first win at that year’s Italian Open. He would go on to triumph at 11 further European Tour events. These were his other wins

Ian Poulter: Tournament Wins

-2001 Morocco Open

-2002 Italian Open

-2003 Wales Open

-2003 Nordic Open

-2004 Andalucia Masters

-2006 Madrid Open

-2009 Singapore Open

-2010 WGC Match Play

-2010 Hong Kong Open

-2011 World Match Play

-2012 WGC Champions

His other notable individual triumph came on the PGA Tour when he won the 2018 Houston Open, beating Beau Hossler in a playoff, which secured him the final spot in the field for that year’s Masters.

Ian Poulter: Majors Record

Despite his previous successes, a Major win has eluded Poulter, who came closest to claiming one of the game’s biggest prizes when he finished runner-up to defending champion Padraig Harrington at Royal Birkdale in 2008. Other than that, his only other Major top-five finish was at the US PGA Championship at Kiawah Island in 2012 when he finished third behind Rory McIlroy, who claimed his second Major triumph with an eight-shot win.

Poulter’s best performance at the Masters came three years later when he claimed a tie for sixth when Jordan Spieth got his hands on the Green Jacket, while his best US Open finish to date was at the 2006 tournament when he was 12th as Australian Geoff Ogilvy triumphed.

Ian Poulter: ‘The Postman’ at The Ryder Cup

While his individual achievements cannot be sniffed at, it is at the Ryder Cup where Poulter has really come into his own over the years, appearing in seven competitions for Europe against the USA and being victorious in five of them. He has won 15 of his 25 matches and is unbeaten in seven singles matches.

On many occasions he has galvanised the European effort with moments of inspiration, with the highlight of his career coming at the Miracle of Medinah when five successive birdies for him and McIlroy dragged Europe back into contention as they recovered from 10-6 down to win. Poulter cast an inspirational figure and his name will always be associated with the bi-annual competition that grips the world of golf.

Ian Poulter: Joining LIV Golf

Any future Ryder Cup captaincy which would be almost guaranteed to go to Poulter one day has been put in jeopardy with his move to LIV Golf. LIV players have yet to receive the go-ahead to play for the European side and Poulter resigned his DP World Tour membership in 2023.

He plays on the breakaway tour as a member of the Majesticks team alongside Henrik Stenson, Lee Westwood and Sam Horsfield, and his best individual performance came in his most recent event in Chicago in September, so he will hope that acts as a building block for a successful 2025 campaign.
