The elite of golf head to Scotland this week for the final Major of the year, The Open Championship, and it looks set to be a keenly contested tournament at Royal Troon. Once again, world number one Scottie Scheffler heads the market at 4.95 after six victories this year, but he has not been in action since the last of those triumphs at the Travelers Championship a month ago, deciding against gaining some links practice at last week’s Scottish Open.
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy will be looking to make up for his US Open disappointment by claiming his fifth Major and is 7.60 to do so, while Bryson DeChambeau, who triumphed at Pinehurst, is 11.60 alongside Swedish sensation Ludvig Aberg.
The Open Championship: Mighty McIlroy
Two missed putts cost Rory McIlroy a second US Open triumph last month, but the Northern Irishman can bounce back at Royal Troon this week. He allowed Bryson DeChambeau to triumph at PInehurst, but McIlroy looks to have gathered himself after that disappointment and fourth spot at last week’s Scottish Open suggests he could be set for a bold charge for the Claret Jug.
McIlory has finished in the top six in six of the last eight Opens and has won the Zurich Classic of New Orleans and the Wells Fargo Championship this year. And it should be remembered that the last time he threw away a Major – the 2011 Masters – he bounced back to win the US Open by eight shots a couple of months later, so expect a strong recovery this week.
The Open Championship: More Mori
Collin Morikawa has failed to make the weekend on his two Open appearances since winning at Royal St George’s in 2021, but he is in the sort of form that suggests he could go close to another Major triumph this week at 15.10.
The American has not finished lower than 16th in his last nine individual tournaments and that run includes third spot at the Masters, fourth at the US PGA Championship and 14th at the US Open. He has not won since October’s Zozo Championship, but he was tied for fourth at the Renaissance Club last week and that looks strong form.

The Open Championship: Jason’s Day
It is nine years since former world number one Jason Day won the US PGA Championship, but the Australian is dragging himself back up the rankings after a series of injury problems and he could force his way into the top ten this week. Such a finishing position is a 7.80 chance and he has been placed in the top ten in four PGA Tour tournaments this year, including fourth at the Wells Fargo Championship.
He was second behind Brian Harman at Royal Liverpool last year and 22nd the last time the Open was at Troon in 2016, so the Ayrshire track should prove to his liking. Whilst, admittedly an unlikely winner of The Open Championship, the Australian boasts a short game capable of achieving a top ten finish at Troon.
