The eyes of the golf world will be focused on Augusta National in Georgia on Thursday 10th April for the first day of The Masters 2025, which looks set to be the usual wide-open battle for the distinction of winning the prestigious Green Jacket.
The Masters 2025: Early Green Jacket Contenders
World number one Scottie Scheffler is the 4.65 favourite having triumphed at the prestigious venue in two of the last three years, while Rory McIlroy is 8.25 to finally get his hands on the Major that has eluded him in his quest to join the game’s immortals as a Grand Slam winner.
A large number of hopefuls from both the PGA and LIV Tours will be looking to be at the top of their game and here are three players to keep a close eye on for the first Major of the year.
The Masters 2025 Contenders: Ludvig Aberg (13.30)
A Scandinavian player has never won The Masters but Ludvig Aberg is already one of the greatest players to have emerged from that region and he could build on a strong Augusta debut in 2024.
It usually takes Green Jacket hopefuls a few years to get to grips with the undulations and nuances of America’s most famous golf course, but Aberg flourished last year, on his first visit, by finishing second behind Scheffler when his Friday 69 was the best effort of the second round.
Jordan Spieth went on to win after finishing second on his bow in 2014 and Aberg could have given Scheffler a much closer run for his money had he not carded an opening 73. The Swede has already been in the winners’ circle on the PGA Tour in 2025, having landed February’s Genesis Invitational at Torrey Pines, so he looks geared to make a charge at a much bigger prize in April.
The Masters 2025 Contenders: Hideki Matsuyama (21.10)
Hideki Mastuyama made history at The Masters in 2021 when he became the first Japanese player to win a Major and he has solid enough form at Augusta to suggest he could capture another Green Jacket. His 38th last year was his worst performance at the venue since he missed the 2014 cut and he has had eight top-20 finishes in the first Major of the year since that weekend off.
Matsuyama got 2025 off to the perfect start when he won January’s Sentry in Hawaii and he can usually be relied upon to get himself into the mix so expect a bold bid.
The Masters 2025 Contenders: Brooks Koepka (24.30)
Five-time Major winner Brooks Koepka can be an enigma but he can usually be relied upon to turn up at the biggest tournaments. He has had a couple of decent stabs at winning The Masters – he was joint runner-up when Tiger Woods triumphed in 2019 and then surrendered the 54-hole lead when Jon Rahm came out on top four years later.
But Koepka knows what it takes to win the biggest tournaments and after he won the LIV Greenbrier in August and was seventh in the breakaway tour’s February get-together in Adelaide, this could be the year he gets over the Augusta line.
