Scottish Open 2024: Fantastic Fleetwood to Flourish

The Open Championship 2024

It’s not unusual for Scotland to see more rain than sunshine across the summer and this year’s Scottish Open 2024 conditions look likely to test the players again. The world’s top golfers will gather at the Renaissance Club, a tournament that is co-sanctioned by both the PGA and DP World Tours.

Rory McIlroy took the title in 2023 and the Northern Irishman will return this week to play his first event since his heart-breaking second at the US Open. In this article, we have suggested three players to follow as the 156-man field battles it out to collect the winner’s cheque, which amounts to £1.575million.

Scottish Open 2024 Tips:  Tommy Fleetwood

When looking at the Scottish Open stats over the last four years, nobody has been more consistent in this tournament than Tommy Fleetwood. The man from Merseyside has finished T6–T4–T26–2 and looks like a contender again this week, especially when also considering his recent form.

Fleetwood has finished inside the top-25 in five of his last six PGA Tour events – which includes a T16 finish at last month’s US Open. His experience of playing links golf could also be crucial this week, with the weather forecast suggesting showers and a fresh breeze over a chunk of the four days.

Fleetwood finished six shots behind McIlroy last year, after carding a final round of 72 – which was nine shots worse than his Saturday score. The 33-year-old ranks third in Driving Accuracy Percentage on the US Tour and being straight off the tee could be crucial in Aberdeen.

Scottish Open 2024: Tom Kim

He may have grown up in sunnier climes, but Joo-hyung Kim – otherwise known as Tom Kim – has taken a liking to links golf in the UK. The South Korean star only turned 22 in June, but he already has three PGA Tour titles to his name and two top-10 finishes in Majors.

One of those came at last year’s Open Championship, when he finished second to Brian Harman at Royal Liverpool in what were really tough conditions. Kim also impressed in this event in 2023, eventually finishing T6 after carding rounds of 66 and 65 over the first two rounds. He heads to Aberdeen after a much-needed two-week break, having lost a play-off to Scottie Scheffler at last month’s Travelers Championship.

Scottish Open 2024:  Bernd Wiesberger

Having returned from a spell on LIV Golf, Bernd Wiesberger is back on the DP World Tour and looking to make a big impact. The Austrian is a former winner of the Scottish Open, taking the title in 2019 on the first occasion the tournament took place at the Renaissance Club.

Not only did Wiesberger win that edition, but he finished on 22-under-par – the lowest winning total at the Aberdeen venue. The 38-year-old finished T2 at the European Open last month, before following that up with an impressive T7 finish at the KLM Open. Wiesberger heads to Aberdeen having finished in the top 20 at the BMW International Open last week.
