With the Tour Championship bringing the curtain down on the PGA campaign, the DP World Tour has the golf stage to itself this week as the Omega European Masters takes place at Crans-sur-Sierre Golf Club in Switzerland.
Expert Golf Tips: Omega European Masters
Last year’s winner Ludvig Aberg and British Masters champion Niklas Norgaard won’t be there, but a host of former winners at the stunning Swiss Alps course will be competing, including two-time victor Matthew Fitzpatrick, South African Thriston Lawrence and Denmark’s Rasmus Hojgaard.
Fitzpatrick looks set to go off favourite – he was third behind Aberg last year – but it has been a difficult campaign for the Sheffield swinger, who has claimed just three top-10 finishes this season and had to withdraw from last month’s Olympics due to an injured thumb. Better value could, therefore, be found elsewhere and there is plenty of motivation for players to make great progress in the world rankings in the closing months of the DPWT campaign.
Expert Golf Tips: Lawrence Trending Up
Matt Fitzpatrick is the strongest player in the field on paper, but his recent form and injury issues have to be concerns, so red-hot South African Thriston Lawrence looks a much better proposition at 16.80. Lawrence beat Matt Wallace in a play-off to take the European Masters title in 2022 and he has produced the sort of performances recently that suggest he is well equipped to have another storming week.
He was second at the European Open in June and then really made his mark in the final Major of the year when he finished fourth in The Open at Royal Troon. That put a spring in his step and, after winning a three-round Sunshine Tour event at home by five shots, he was then second at last week’s British Masters, so another victory does not seem to be far away.
Omega European Masters: Be Wary of Wiesberger
Rasmus Hojgaard won this event in 2021 and was third at The Belfry last week, but the man who was runner-up to him in 2021 may represent a better bet at 21.20. Bernd Wiesberger returned to DP World Tour action at the start of the year after a spell in LIV Golf and has been the model of consistency, finishing in the top 25 in 11 of his 15 tournaments.
He is officially the fourth best tee-to-green player on the Tour which should help him on a course where the key is to find the tree-lined fairways to attack the small greens. Wiesberger missed last week’s tournament, so could make a big impression after a break.
Omega European Masters: Allez Langasque
Romain Langasque (34.00) has produced some strong recent results including finishing ninth at the BMW International Open and third at the Scottish Open. There were no evident ill-effects from the back injury that caused his withdrawal from The Open when he was second behind fellow Frenchman Frederic LaCroix at the Danish Championship last time out and he can improve upon his best Crans-sur-Sierre finish of seventh in 2016.
