For the first time in 2025 world No.1 Scottie Scheffler graces a field, fully fit after a hand injury sustained over Christmas. Rory McIlroy, Collin Morikawa and Patrick Cantlay are among the other big names in an all-star field gathered for one of the biggest and most popular events on the PGA Tour.
Pebble Beach Pro-Am 2025: Classy Cantlay
The presence of Scheffler in any field gives it added punch, and the PGA Tour and tournament organisers will be thrilled to have the world No.1 in the field. That clearly means he is fit after a hand injury and that naturally enough makes the two-time Masters champ the favourite.
However, the American ace hasn’t been since the Hero Challenge at the start of December (which he won, obviously) and with doubts over his game-readiness, the complexities of an event which features marathon rounds with amateurs involved, and the calibre of field, he can be overlooked.
While everyone is talking about Scheffler, and to a lesser extent McIlroy, Cantlay goes under the radar – as usual. The rock-steady Ryder Cup ace and world No.13 is overdue a first win since 2022 and this could be that week. Since missing the cut at The Memorial last year he has played nine events, all top 25s and three top-10s including at the American Express two weeks ago.
Pebble Beach Pro-Am 2025: Dead-Eye Denny
With amateurs out for the ride on one of California’s most revered stretches of golfing real estate, neither Pebble Beach nor Spyglass Hill (which all the pros play on either Thursday or Friday) are particularly long. Good putting will send players sky-rocketing up the leaderboard and Denny McCarthy is as good as they come with the flat stick.
Still inside the world top 50, the two-time tour runner-up put together four really decent rounds on his last start at the Sony Open for a T16. He ranks fifth in strokes gained putting of those taking part this week and with two top 12s in his last three visits to Pebble, he should fancy his chances.
Pebble Beach Pro-Am 2025: Mighty Maverick
World No.3 McIlroy brushed off the cobwebs two weeks ago with a T4 at the Dubai Desert Classic, but this is his first competitive outing in the US since the Tour Championship in September. Like Scheffler, he could easily hit an unstoppable vein but he is priced accordingly.
Players with course knowledge always demand a bit of respect especially when, in the case of Maverick McNealy, you can back it up with two T5s in this event. The former top-ranked amateur in the world was a winner at the RSM Open back in November and given his accuracy tee to green, if the putter gets hot he becomes a serious contender.
