We’re into Round 2 of the World Grand Prix Darts 2024, with 4 more ties on Thursday night with the format moving to an extended best-of-five-sets in Leicester.
World Grand Prix Darts 2024: Round 2 Tips
Luke Littler, Michael Smith, Damon Heta and Michael van Gerwen all fell in the first-round, and with four quarter-finalists to be decided on Thursday evening, the remaining arrowsmiths will have eyes on the double-in prize.
World Grand Prix Darts 2024: Awesome Ando
Gary Anderson got the better of Smith in a heavy-hitting first-round tie and the Flying Scotsman has to be considered a major World Grand Prix title contender. That is not to say that a second-round tie against Mike de Decker will be an easy assignment, but it is hard to resist the talents of the Scot.
Anderson is clear as the outstanding performer on the Pro Tour this season and the two-time back-to-back PDC world champion is putting up a staggering 110.36 first-nine average. The Flying Scotsman is the most frequent maximum hitter on tour this term, with De Decker the 53-year-old’s closest rival. Clearly, a runaway Anderson victory is a danger if going long on 180s, but the Real Deal should keep tabs on the Scot and that should ensure maximum action.
World Grand Prix Darts 2024: Price is Right
Gerwyn Price will need to improve from a poor first-round showing against Danny Noppert, but that is just one match and the bigger picture suggests the Iceman should be too good for James Wade. The Welshman has won the World Grand Prix, made two finals and a semi-final in his last four visits to the event and his selection isn’t all based on previous tournament form.
Price has won two World Series events this season, the Pro Tour numbers have been good without due reward, and the Iceman has been outperforming Wade on the figures. Take the Welshman -1.5 sets on the handicap.
World Grand Prix Darts 2024: Super Superchin
Daryl Gurney won six legs on the bounce when beating Van Gerwen 2-0 in round one and the Northern Irishman can back up that success against Joe Cullen. Superchin is performing at a level similar to what he produced when lifting the World Grand Prix crown in 2017 and that could prove too much for Cullen.
Rockstar impressed when getting the better of Chris Dobey, but that was an outlier on the Bradford star’s recent efforts and Cullen may struggle to produce a repeat.
World Grand Prix Darts 2024: Dangerous Dimi
A 2-1 victory over Luke Woodhouse doesn’t read as the strongest form from the first-round, but Dimitri van den Bergh produced some brilliant darts against a top-performing opponent in that contest, and the Dreammaker can strike again.
Dimi’s average of 97.18 was the highest of the opening round in Leicester and it’s clear that the Belgian comes alive on the big stage. Dave Chisnall is a dangerous arrowsmith, but there is enough in offers of 6/5 to think that Van den Bergh may outpoint Chizzy on Thursday night.
