Premier League Darts Play-Offs Tips
After three-and-a-half months and 16 rounds of action, the 2024 Premier League has reached finals night and we have put together some expert Premier League darts play-offs tips
The eight-man field who began the tournament have been whittled down to the four who will be heading to London’s O2 on Thursday evening with eyes on the £275,000 first prize and getting their hands on the trophy.
Luke Littler finished top of the table and plays fourth-placed Michael Smith in the first semi-final before Luke Humphries, who came home in second, takes on Michael van Gerwen.
Both semis are best-of-19 legs, the subsequent final between the two winners is over a best-of-21 and it’s Humphries at 2.30 who is regarded as the man to beat.
Premier League Darts Play-Offs Tips: Smith might just have The Nuke’s number
Littler is enjoying an extraordinary rise up the rankings in his first year on tour and his debut Premier League campaign couldn’t have gone any better.
He has enjoyed four nightly triumphs and topped the table – but if there’s one player who might just have his measure, it’s Smith and that makes their semi-final a really fascinating one.
The formbook says Littler, who seems immune from pressure and thrives on the bigger occasion, should win. However, head-to-head form screams Smith.
These two darting superstars have met seven times in this season’s Premier League and Bully Boy has won five of those tussles, most recently a week ago in Sheffield. Yet the 2023 world champion is being dangled at 2.65. That’s too big a price to turn down.
Premier League Darts Play-Offs Tips: Cool Hand to wear down seven-time champ
Van Gerwen has always had an edge over this year’s field, the advantage of knowing how to win the Premier League being something none of the others have.
Indeed, the Dutchman has won the title seven times before. However, this year has not been vintage Van Gerwen and while the flashes of class remain jaw-dropping, he’s not really produced them against Humphries.
And even when he has it hasn’t been good enough.
The current world champion has beaten Van Gerwen in each of their last six meetings over the last two-and-a-half months and that degree of domination is hard to argue with.
Where Humphries has a sizeable advantage is in the 180 hitting; he is averaging a maximum every 2.7 legs, Van Gerwen one every 3.5. Back Cool Hand to cover 1.5 on the 180s handicap at 1.78.
Premier League Darts Play-Offs Tips: Humphries primed to join exclusive club
Humphries goes off the 2.30 favourite and looks the bet to become just the third player – after Phil Taylor and Van Gerwen – to hold world and Premier League titles at the same time.
The world No.1, making his Premier League debut let’s not forget, is the only player over the course of the previous 16 weeks to finish with an average over 100.
He has reached six finals and is a groove player, so if he can see off Van Gerwen then he will be a hard man to stop.
M Smith to beat L Littler @ 2.65
L Humphries -1.5 180s h’cap v M van Gerwen @ 1.78
L Humphries to win Premier League @ 2.30
