Premier League Darts 2024 Week 4 Preview (Newcastle)

Players Championship Darts

Wey Aye Man! World class darts hits the North East tonight with the Premier League roadshow making its first stop in England for night number 4 in Newcastle! All eyes are on reigning Premier League of Darts Champion Michael Van Gerwen who currently sits three points clear at the top of the table after back-to-back night victories in both Berlin and Glasgow.

As good as MVG is playing at present, there are signs others are playing their way back into form, including reigning World Champion Luke Humphries – who was narrowly defeated by the ‘green machine’ on the Hydro stage in the final last week in the Scottish capital.

Mighty Michael Van Gerwen

Van Gerwen said after his win last week that “the Premier League is not a sprint, it’s a marathon, but I just want to do what I love the most, and that’s performing on the biggest stages, and hopefully I can make as many good results as possible”.

A week-by-week approach seems to be working so far for Van Gerwen, who says to be enjoying his darts again after a sticky 2023. His new relaxed attitude bodes brilliantly for Van Gerwen and his quest for an unprecedented eighth Premier League Title. It doesn’t bode well for his peers however, and Welshman Gerwyn Price has the task facing MVG in tonight’s quarters. Good luck Gez!

Premier League Darts 2024 Week 4 Odds –  Quarter-Finals

– 1.62 Michael Smith v Nathan Aspinall 2.10

– 2.60 Rob Cross v Luke Humphries 1.42

– 3.50 Peter Wright v Luke Littler 1.24

– 2.10 Gerwyn Price v Michael Van Gerwen 1.63

The opening quarter final game will see Michael Smith play World Matchplay Champion and close friend Nathan Aspinall – the latter still on the hunt for his first points of the season after a luckless opening few weeks. Like MVG said ‘it’s a marathon, not a sprint’ however Nathan needs to up pace before the front runners open the gap even further.

The two middle quarter finals feature teenage sensation Luke Littler against an out-of-form Peter Wright. Peter joked this week that the only way to beat Littler will be to nick his phone so he couldn’t play FIFA, which has become a pre-match ritual for the teenager.

The Littler Effect

Peter showed signs of life earlier in the week at the Pro Tour events in Leicester, and I think he’s a big price to upset Littler in front of a likely buoyant north-east crowd. Littler suffered an uncharacteristic dip in form at those events out in the quarter-finals to Callum Rydz on Monday and a first round exit 6-5 to James Wade on Tuesday. His results create headlines, regardless of the outcome now. ‘Luke The Nuke’ will be truly warmed up for Newcastle this evening and it would be a brave man to take him on, albeit with the tempting price of ‘Snakebite’ at 3.50 to make the final four.

Cool Hand Creeping Back

The final quarter-final fixture is an all-English affair with Robbie Cross bidding to take down World Champion Luke Humphries. “Cool Hand” averaged 100+ in all three matches last week in Glasgow and, despite losing to Michael Van Gerwen in the final, he is clearly going in the right direction after the media storm surrounding his World Championship success last month on The Ally Pally stage.

I think we could be in store for a repeat of last week’s final and, if Luke Humphries was to be odds-against, when facing The Green Machine in the final, then he’d be the value for me! Either way, roll on a brill night of arrows in the North East and for a cheap thrill if you are in Newcastle ask a Geordie to say ‘pooper scooper’ or ‘ginger beer’- thank me later!
