Grand Slam of Darts 2024: Big Surprises in Wolverhampton

Dave Chisnall

The unique group-stage extravaganza of the Grand Slam of Darts 2024 gets under way on Saturday and there will be plenty of thrill, spills and calculations as 32 arrowsmiths battle it out for the title. The competition has an impressive roll of honour with World Champions such as Michael Van Gerwen, Phil Taylor and Luke Humphries all laying claim to the Title.

Grand Slam of Darts 2024: Wolves Winner

The first round group-stage adds an extra layer of complexity to the competition, before it boils down to a 16-runner knockout event following the round-robin start, and as always the draw is key.

Grand Slam of Darts 2024: Chizzy to Send them Dizzy

It won’t have escaped the notice of many that Dave Chisnall is yet to win a major televised PDC event, but Chizzy’s Grand Slam draw looks pretty kind and the St Helens man rates as a big-priced punt.  Chisnall is a former Grand Slam finalist having reached the showpiece in 2014 and the 44-year-old is a six-time major runner-up.

Of course, there have to be doubts about the St Helens thrower getting over the line, but Chizzy is a 15-time Players Championship winner, has won eight times on the European Tour and there is enough in the price to keep the faith with the former Grand Slam finalist.  Chisnall has won twice on the European Tour and twice on the Pro Tour this season and the averages are all in order.

Grand Slam of Darts 2024: Favourable Draw

Luke Humphries, Luke Littler, Michael van Gerwen, Gary Anderson and Michael Smith are the five shortest arrowsmiths in the Grand Slam outright betting and all but Cool Hand Luke are housed in the bottom half of the draw.  Van Gerwen, Anderson, Smith and Littler are fantastic players and they would all have a chance of taking down the Wolverhampton prize.

However, only one of those arrowsmiths can make the final and when you chuck Stephen Bunting, Josh Rock, Wessel Nijman and recent Grand Prix winner Mike De Decker into the bottom-half mix it’s clear that the first section of the event is the place to play.  Chisnall has been handed a group-stage draw alongside Ross Smith, Ritchie Edhouse and Connor Scutt, and while it’s no walk in the park, it doesn’t look as tricky as a Group H line-up containing Bunting, Rock, Gian van Veen and Nijman.

Grand Slam of Darts 2024: High Voltage

Rob Cross lines up against Peter Wright, Martin Lukeman and Leonard Gates in Group C and that’s just about as kind as it could have been for Voltage.  The Kent arrowsmith is safely tucked away from the big-hitting half of the draw, and if Cross and Humprhies win their sections, as expected, there will be no clash with Cool Hand Luke until the semi-finals.

Voltage has made four major quarter-finals this season, the 34-year-old reached the semi-finals of the World Championship at the turn of the year and the Kent thrower has won on the World Series this term.  Cross rates another strong selection from the top half of the draw.
