Dave Chisnall is back from a disappointing few days in Leicester, and is already through to the next round of the Hungarian Darts Open in Budapest after a scintillating display to knockout Wesley Nijman this afternoon. Read his exclusive updates
Dave Chisnall: Hungry for Budapest Success
It’s been a long week, with a bit of rust seen when playing in Monday’s World Series Qualifier, and then the two Players’ Championship events at Leicester. I was feeling it there, because I haven’t been doing much practice during the summer.
Our 4 year old Parker loves having us home, but if I try and go and play darts he stands in the way of the board lol – he just wants to play all the time. So we’ve been doing lots of family trips, and I know I got spotted at Flamingo Land last week. It’s about trying to keep them busy.

That being said, I’m in a really good place with my darts, which people will laugh at, and that’s fine. For me to get to Blackpool for the World Matchplay is easily the biggest done I’ve done int he sport over the last 12-18 months or so. It meant a lot to get there, and really grind on the Pro Tour and Euro Tour to get that lost spot.
It also reaffirmed that I can play, because I’ve been getting results without being on the top of my game – which is what it’s all about really. I’ve probably been too bothered about 180s and scoring averages etc, but as my manager says – would you rather play well and hit a load of maximums and lose or play badly and win? In this game, it’s about winning, and I’m learning to not get so hung up on the details.
Dave Chisnall: Blossoming in Budapest
Friday was good, I played well against the young lad, with some nice finishes. The crowd looked like getting behind him when he took an early lead but a good 136 finish steadied the nerves and I knew I was going to hit that 120 to win the match. Sometimes you just know you’re not missing – it’s really hard to explain.
The game against Wesley earlier was probably the best I’ve played on tour in over a year, and a lot of it is trying to free myself a bit more on stage. I get in a habit of trying to flight them in a bit more, whereas in the last week or so I’ve been throwing them harder.
There was a big moment when I’d just missed a couple of darts to go 5-1 up and opened up with a 58, in other games I’d get a bit frustrated and let my head drop a bit but I’m trying to stay more focused and followed-up with a 180 and 125. The two legs on throw I won at the end Wesley was 218 and 140 points behind. And he’s a top, top class player so it shows that if I can get my game together I’ve still got a good chance of winning trophies.
It will be a case of a bit of food later, an early night and ready for Sunday again. I’m really excited about the next few months. You’re going to see a new Dave Chisnall. Stay tuned!
