Having landed a full house of winners in his last T20 World Cup 2026 preview, Andy Schooler previews Wednesday’s first semi-final between South Africa and New Zealand.
T20 World Cup 2026: Semi Final Preview
Venue: Eden Gardens, Kolkata, India
Date/Time: Wednesday March 4, 1330 GMT

South Africa have reached the semi-finals as the tournament’s only unbeaten team and they look worthy favourites here at 1.52. Their explosive batting was well known before the action began three weeks ago but there were some doubts over whether their bowling attack would have the control necessary to keep opposition scores down.
T20 World Cup 2026: Super Saffers
That is a test which has been passed with flying colours and one of the stars on that front has been Corbin Bosch. He’s kept a tight rein on opposing batters with his economy rate down at an impressive 6.78. Importantly, in terms of this preview, he’s also managed to take wickets – seven in the middle of the innings and four at the death, where he has been particularly effective. His last four matches have brought wicket tallies of 2-2-2-3 and I feel he’s the value in the top South African bowler market at 4.5.
New Zealand have already lost twice and only scraped through to this stage on net run rate. They did push England pretty close but, notably, were well beaten by South Africa in the initial group stage, losing by seven wickets with 17 balls to spare. That’s a bit of a hammering at this level. They don’t seem to have enough wicket-takers at the moment – they only dismissed four Canadians and it was three South Africans in that group-phase match.
T20 World Cup 2026: Bank on Bickelton
They will have to improve in that department here as South Africa’s batting line-up is strong. Captain Aidan Markram leads the run-charts for the Proteas but it’s Ryan Rickelton who I’m looking to side with here. Rickelton, who will come in at number three, has made a decent contribution in nearly every match, while his big-hitting has been reflected in his six-hitting ability. He’s managed 15 so far and could easily end up as the tournament leader on that metric.
Rickelton’s scores so far have been 33-61-21-30-7-45-31 and his runs line here is set at 23.5. For those who haven’t already worked it out, he’s landed this in five of seven innings at the tournament. Eden Gardens is a venue well known for producing decent scores. England and Scotland both went past 200 against Italy here, while West Indies made 195 against India the other day – and the hosts knocked that off pretty easily.
T20 World Cup 2026: Back the Unders
In short, this should be a decent strip to bat on and Rickelton can underline his form with another score of 24 or more. My final bet comes in the total sixes market. After what I said about the venue being good for batting, taking the unders here may seem a little odd.
However, the line is set at 18.5 and it looks a little on the high side. Kolkata has staged six games so far but only one has seen 19 or more sixes hit. OK, most of those games have involved an associate member (although you can argue that increases the chances of sixes being hit of a weak bowling attack) but even when you look at India v West Indies, there were plenty of runs but only 16 sixes.
Like those teams, South Africa and New Zealand do boast some big-hitters but there were only 15 sixes hit when these teams met in Ahmedabad, another strong batting venue, a couple of weeks ago. For what it’s worth, they didn’t get near 19 sixes in their three meetings in Harare last year either, those matches producing tallies of 13-5-12.
