Unmissable Action Boxing Day 2024: Football, Horse Racing and Cricket

Boxing Day 2024

Boxing Day 2024: Boxing Day Sport – What’s On?

There’s a feast of sporting action over the festive period with a whole host of cracking events taking place.

Boxing Day delivers a plethora of fantastic football, some top-level horse racing action and we take a look at the highlights of the day.

Boxing Day 2024: Premier League

There are eight Premier League games taking place on Boxing Day, starting with Manchester City’s trip to relegation-threatened Leicester City.

City’s crisis deepened with a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa on Saturday, making it just one win in the last 12 matches for Pep Guardiola’s side.

There are five fixtures kicking off at 3pm, including Villa’s trip to St James’ Park to take on Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest’s clash against Tottenham Hotspur at the City Ground.

At 5.30pm, Wolves host Manchester United before the final action of the day takes place at Anfield, where Liverpool face Leicester at 8pm.

Boxing Day 2024: English Football League (EFL)

It is also a busy day of football in the three tiers below the Premier League, with all 72 EFL clubs in action across the day.

In the Championship, 10 matches begin at 3pm, with one at 5.30pm and the final contest at 8pm.

Leeds United make the trip to Stoke City for that final clash of the day, with the visitors looking to keep their foot on the gas in pursuit of a return to the Premier League.

In League One, Leyton Orient face Crawley Town at 1pm before the remaining 11 games all get under way at 3pm. In League Two, all 12 fixtures start at 3pm.

Boxing Day 2024: King George VI Chase (2.50pm Kempton)

There is no outstanding candidate for the King George, but this year’s renewal of the Kempton showpiece looks a top-level and competitive contest.

Spillane’s Tower, who ran a cracker in the John Durkan Memorial Chase at Punchestown last time out, is the market-leader, but there are no shortage of challengers.

Chief of those is Il Est Francais, who bolted up over course and distance in Kauto Star Novices’ Chase last year, but the French runner has something to prove after pulling up at Auteuil last time out.

Banbridge and Grey Dawning look to hold a serious chance of taking the Kempton prize and

Corbetts Cross, Envoi Allen and Hewick can all be given a squeak.

The King George is one of the highlights of the national hunt season and this term’s running looks set to be a Christmas cracker.

Boxing Day 2024: Cricket

Australia and India continue to lock horns at Melbourne Cricket Ground, in the fourth Test in the five-match series.

Level at 1-1 after three Tests, there has been some pulsating cricket between these two nations and another enthralling encounter is expected.

The first day starts at 11.30pm on Christmas Day and goes right into the early hours of Boxing Day, with the second day beginning at 11.30pm on Boxing Day.

The Test matches between South Africa and Pakistan and Zimbabwe and Afghanistan will also be taking place, with the opening day’s play on Boxing Day.
