Cheltenham October Meeting: Weekend Racing Tips

Along with the November meeting, this meeting can often be used as a stepping stone to the Festival. Jazzy Matty and Seddon just two recent Showcase runners who went on to score in March.  I’m very thankful that the rain came in time for this meeting. Luckily we aren’t in a situation like Wincanton where firm ground has put pay to their Sunday meeting.

Weekend Racing Tips: Darcy’s Friend (1.10)

Darcy’s Friend was unlucky in his last run. Travelled smoothly but was narrowly outstayed when stepped up in trip on a quick turnaround, late mistakes proving costly as he finished second, beaten 2½ lengths, in a 2m7f beginners’ chase at Killarney last time. He’s effective between 2m and 3m and looks a progressive sort over both hurdles and fences. This is more competitive but from what we’ve seen so far, it’s in his sights.

Weekend Racing Tips: The Wallpark (2:55)

The Pertemps Final is one of my favourite races of the Festival. So, of course, I love the qualifiers. You can get a lot of amusement from watching them. This is a competitive one. Willie Mullins has his only Cheltenham runner of the weekend in Chart Topper.

Gordon Elliott won this last year with The Wallpark who went on to be a Grade 1 performer. He has a progressive type in here in the form of Winning Smut who scored at Galway. However, Long Draw absolutely loves Cheltenham. You can put a line through his Haydock run as that track would not have suited him at all. I wanted him to run in the final last year but it was not to be. The jockey / stable combination could not be in better form, so for this race, I’m sticking with the home side!

Weekend Racing Tips: Not Without Danger (4:40)

Sam Drinkwater has his small string in decent form. They run Not Without Danger (4.40) here. From the family of Ungaro, he was second in a Ffos Las bumper at the end of last season. Going down one and a half lengths to the more experienced The Blue Room. I think the current price of 14/1 is fair.

Weekend Racing Tips: Ballybawn Belter (2.35)

Sunday sees the middle day of Galway’s Irish bank holiday meeting. One of our recent eye-catchers Ballybawn Belter runs in the: 2:35 Off a mark of 122, the seven year old inmate of Liz Doyle would want to be getting competitive to get into some big Irish handicaps. I think we may see an improved performance here.
