Weekend Racing Tips: Dave Massey Saturday Fancies
Glenfinnan (1.50) won this last year, something of a bolt from the blue as he’d not been in great form and was giving 7f another try, but he won it well and with the handicapper starting to cut him a bit of slack – a most welcome 3lb drop again after a better effort at Newcastle last time – he might be worth chancing to retain his crown.
Weekend Racing Tips: Glenfinnan (Sandown, 1.50)
Quite a few of Michael Dods’s older handicappers sprang back to life at York last week and many of them looked really well beforehand too, plenty of them coming to themselves in their coats, even at this advanced stage of the season, and the yard could be in for a good autumn. Glenfinnan has found it hard going for much of the summer but his mark has probably been too high. That’s not the case now, he’s a full 12lb below where he was in May, and he did look like he might be on the way back to form when midfield over 6f at Newcastle last time. He needs to build on that, but that’s far from impossible.
Weekend Racing Tips: Jeff Koons (Sandown, 3.00)
Jeff Koons (3.00) has been put in a double-figure price by the firms here, and that looks worth chancing. He just needed a run to reacclimatise himself after spending the spring out in Qatar, but he looked in good order when eighth in the Hunt Cup at a massive price and off the back of that, ran a cracker to be third to Windlord in the Listed Gala Stakes over this C&D at the start of July.
He attracted a lot of support when second to runaway winner Fox Legacy in a Conditions Stakes at Goodwood last time, looking very much in need of further. A well-run 10f around here might be just what he needs to show his form, and he can give us a nice each-way return for our money.
Weekend Racing Tips: Distinction (Beverley, 1.30)
The worry is that Distinction (1.30) is going to find this a bit out of his range as far as class goes, but you cannot deny two things – one, he’s in absolutely cracking form at present, having won his last two races, and two, just look at his record at Beverley. Six starts here have seen him return the form figures of 421121, one of those seconds denied victory by just a nose. You can’t argue against that, and better still, neither will he mind if there’s a drop of rain, something that would definitely count against a few of his opponents. He looks terrific each-way value at 12-1 and bigger.
