Terrific Thursday Tips: Three Horses to Follow, August 8th 2024

St Leger Festival at Doncaster:

There is pattern action on the Flat on Thursday afternoon with a couple of Group races at Leopardstown and we have three Terrific Thursday Tips for punters to get stuck into. There’s also a jumps card in Ireland as well as a quartet of Flat meetings in Britain. Read our preview ahead of a busy day of flat racing.

Terrific Thursday Tips: The Euphrates (6:22)

Aidan O’Brien may not have enjoyed success in the Group 3 Ballyroan Stakes since 2017 when Spanish Steps caused an upset by getting the better of an odds-on stablemate, but the Ballydoyle maestro has solid claims of landing this renewal. The Euphrates is his sole representative this time around and, as the only three-year-old in the line-up, has the benefit of the generous weight for age allowance that the Classic generation get at this stage of the season.

The son of Frankel found Group 1 level a bit beyond him in the Irish Derby on his penultimate outing, but he seemed to relish a switch of tactics in the Marble City Stakes at Gowran last month. That Listed contest was the first time we have seen this colt bid to make all and he made good use of his stamina, setting solid fractions and making it a real test for his opponents.

This is a step up in class and he has to improve a bit to get the better of Crystal Black, but this small field scenario could really play to his strengths given that his main rival can overrace in the early stages of his races, while the stiff finish at Leopardstown should also suit this colt. There should be more to come on just his eighth career start and with Ryan Moore over to take the ride, there’s no better jockey to dictate fractions on the front end in a four-runner field.

Terrific Thursday Tips: Kynsa (8:15 Sandown)

Sandown’s finale has attracted a 14-runner field and it may be worth taking a chance on one at a double-figure price. Kynsa fits the bill off bottom weight. She made a really promising start to life with Kevin Phillipart de Foy, winning at Kempton earlier in the season before bouncing back from a lesser run on Newmarket’s July course to land another all-weather victory last time.

While she’s 0-9 on turf, the filly has shown plenty of ability on the grass, including when narrowly denied at this venue last season and she has only a 2lb rise to cope with for her latest Kempton success.  The stiff finish should suit given that we know she stays further and there could still be more to come for her new yard.

Terrific Thursday Tips 7.15 Sandown – Al Mootamarid

A little earlier on the Sandown card, Al Mootamarid could be the one to side with. He shaped with plenty of promise on his first start since a gelding operation when hitting the frame at Ascot a few weeks ago, possibly making his challenge too early. If Neil Callan gets the timing right this time, he could be ahead of a mark of 85 on just his seventh career start.
