Nothing says that summer has arrived quite like the royal meeting, and we have Royal Ascot Day 1 Tips ahead of the five-day festival of fashion and racing that transcends the sport. The weather might not be playing ball, but that won’t stop the action on the track being as scintillating as ever and the first day feature is the St James’s Palace Stakes (4.25).
Here we look at some of the major races on Tuesday’s Royal Ascot card and attempt to find some winners on the terrestrial action that is live on ITV and ITV4.
Royal Ascot Day 1 Tips: Cowardofthecounty (3.05 Royal Ascot)
This race has gone to Aidan O’Brien in Ireland in three of the last five years, but it might be his son Joseph who takes it back across the Irish Sea this year with COWARDOFTHECOUNTY (3.05). The son of Kodi Bear was an impressive winner on his debut in a 6f maiden at the Curragh and he pulled two and a half lengths clear of the runner-up and hot favourite Whistlejacket.
Whistlejacket was in turn six and a half lengths ahead of the third and has since franked the form in some style by landing a Listed race at the Curragh next time. He is now a red-hot favourite for the Norfolk Stakes later in the week, so Cowardofthecounty did well to beat him. This 100.000gns yearling is a big colt, with plenty of further scope for improvement, and should be difficult to beat, provided he takes a step forward from that initial experience.
Royal Ascot Day 1 Tips: Rosallion (4.25 Royal Ascot)
The big race on the opening day is this mile Group 1 for colts and ROSALLION (4.25) can turn the tables with Notable Speech, who beat him in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket last month. Notable Speech quickened up well that day and was ultimately well on top, but Rosallion travelled like the best horse in the race for a long way and maybe he just needed the run. It was his first outing of the season whereas Notable Speech had run three times on the sand.
Rosallion proved that he is capable of winning a race like this when keeping on strongly to beat Haatem in the Irish 1,000 Guineas on his next outing and that was a good performance as he was in an unpromising position early. He also raced freely, yet still finished off strongly. If he settles better here he is capable of an even better performance and Richard Hannon has won this twice since 2010 with horses who had been beaten in the 2,000 Guineas at Newmarket previously. He trains to improve with racing and Rosallion can come on again.
Royal Ascot Day 1 Tips: Israr (5.40 Royal Ascot)
The last race on ITV is this Listed race and ISRAR (5.40) will be extremely difficult to beat now that he drops in class from Group 2 company over a stiff 1m2f, which should prove ideal. The five-year-old has made a habit of running well without winning recently, but most of his placed efforts have come in stronger races than this and that includes one of his best runs last season at this track, when he finished a three-quarters-of-a-length second in a Group 3.
That was over 1m4f, but he is a strong traveller who is well suited by this shorter trip and his impressive victory in the Princess of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket last season proves that he doesn’t have to be delivered as late as possible. He won by four and a half lengths there. Israr ran right up to his best when second behind the top-class Passenger at Chester last time and there is nothing of that quality in this line up. A reproduction should be enough.
