Expert Picks: Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe Day at Longchamp 2024

The Breeders' Cup 2024

It’s Arc day and a lot of the best horses Europe and Japan have to offer are racing each other across all ages and distances, on Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe Day at Longchamp.

Picking the winner of the Arc is never an easy task with race tactics, the going and draw all having a significant impact on this 1m4f contest. Here we look at some of the major races on Sunday’s ITV card from Paris, and how you might go about finding a winner.

Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe Day: Prix Marcel Boussac

Aidan O’Brien knows what it takes to win this race, having most recently been victorious with Opera Singer last year. Bedtime Story would be a much shorter price had she not been beaten last time, and with excuses coming to light for that performance, and Ryan Moore retaining his faith in her ability, she is the one to beat. Zarigana has looked well above average on both her starts and a good run is to be expected, but she’ll need to improve to get the better of Bedtime Story.

Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe Day: Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere

The form of the Solario Stakes received a strong boost at the weekend with Royal Playwright finishing a good second in the Royal Lodge. Field Of Gold won the Solario and this race has been the plan since. Pulling clear of the field last time and improving with each start he can go on to make it a hat-trick here for the Gosden team. The biggest danger would be Henri Matisse, but he’ll need the blinkers to work given how he ran around in the closing stages last time.

Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe Day – Prix de L’abbaye

This looks likely to go to a British-trained horse based on trends over the past decade with that nation responsible for eight of the past ten winners. The most likely of the lot is the Archie Watson-trained Bradsell. Having been in superior form to the rest since making a belated reappearance in August this year, he is the one to beat. One can try to make cases for others in the race, the most likely being Believing, although having filled the runner-up position behind Bradsell on her last two starts, I see the outcome being the same once again.

Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe Day: The Arc

This is the biggest race of the weekend and the one they all want to win. Shin Emperor is looking to become the first Japanese-trained winner of the contest, and his run at Leopardstown last time gives him a chance of going close. But it is Sosie they all have to beat. Imperious on his last two starts after comfortably getting the better of Delius and Look De Vega most recently, he can once again finish ahead of both of these horses.

He will handle the going and is well drawn in stall five. Provided he breaks reasonably and has a good position through the race he can use the turn of foot shown in his past two wins and become another winner of the race for master trainer Andre Fabre.
