It’s full steam ahead into one of the busiest weekends of the year and the second day of the The July Festival, with Newmarket Friday Tips on a busy day of racing. The card features the Group 1 Falmouth Stakes and the Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes, with class acts wherever you look on a star-studded card. Here we analyse some of the major races on Friday’s ITV card and try to guide you in the direction of finding some winners.
Newmarket Friday Tips: INVOLVEMENT (1.50)
Simon and Ed Crisford can do little wrong recently and they team up with red-hot Oisin Murphy in the opener with INVOLVEMENT (1.50). The Lope De Vega colt was impressive when winning on good to firm ground on his debut at Redcar and showed his versatility when recording a career-best effort on soft going at Haydock in May. He was beaten only a length and a half that day by in-form Nellie Leylax.
Involvement was upped in class in the Britannia at Royal Ascot last time and ran another superb race to finish only six and a quarter lengths behind in seventh of 29 runners. The step up to 1m2f looks certain to suit as his dam, Lady Of Dubai, was an impressive winner of the Height of Fashion at Goodwood over this trip and any further improvement will make Involvement a major player for his in form stable.
Newmarket Friday Tips: ZOFFEE (3.00)
The Northumberland Plate, run at Newcastle two weeks ago, looked a strong race and it was run in a course-record time. The form should work out well and ZOFFEE (3.00) is worth another chance to follow up his Chester Cup win after a luckless run on Tyneside last time. The Hugo Palmer-trained gelding was travelling as well as anything for most of the straight in the Plate but couldn’t get a run. Everywhere jockey Harry Davies went he found his path blocked and even when making ground late on he still managed to find trouble.
Zoffee was allowed to complete in his own time, but can be considered a good deal better than the bare form that day and he is only 4lb higher than when landing the Chester Cup on his previous start. He is also just 1lb higher than when second in that same race last season. Palmer has his string in good order and Zoffee looks well capable of bouncing back from his Newcastle performance, especially with William Buick taking over from Davies in the saddle.
Newmarket Friday Tips: JABAARA (3.35)
The big race and Group 1 of the day is the Falmouth Stakes and the one to back here is JABAARA (3.35), who might be capable of taking the step up to the top class in her stride. Trainer Roger Varian has 1,000 Guineas winner Elmalka in his stable at home, so has a good horse to measure Jabaara against and if he thinks she is capable of competing at the top level he probably has good reason. Jabaara has looked good on her last two starts, too.
Those were only Listed races, but she recorded a solid time when successful at Musselburgh last month and was again dominant when winning at Carlisle last time. This is her first try stepped up to a mile, which could help bring the improvement needed in this higher grade, and the Varian team is in superb form. At what is likely to be a double-figure price it’s worth taking a chance on Jabaara making the step up in grade.
