Three horses to make your Thursday: Newbury Racing Tips

Thursday August 29th

There is an intriguing seven-race card at Newbury on Thursday that takes us through to the evening and we have plenty of competitive handicaps at the Berkshire track to enjoy. Below are three selections in a bid to make it a profitable meeting.

5.55 Newbury – Play The BetVictor Predictor Now Handicap (7f)

The combination of a return to Newbury, a 69-day break and a gelding operation might be enough to see American Bay belatedly break his maiden in the 7f handicap (5.55).

American Bay is a little unlucky to be 0-7 in his career. He twice went close in novices at two, sandwiched between a third-placed effort behind the top-class Ghostwriter at Ascot, and the last time he ran at Newbury he was a massive eyecatcher.

Making his handicap debut off a mark of 83 on his first run of the campaign, American Bay was denied a clear run for a sustained period in the final furlong when travelling smoothly, mounting his challenge away from the first three and shaping like a sure-fire future winner.

He regressed on two subsequent outings at different courses, but remains a three-year-old to be interested in and it is unlikely we have seen his best.

6.30 Newbury – LPG & Lettings Hub Handicap (1m)

Rich is another who is returning from around two months off to appeal in the following mile handicap (6.30).

This filly was an impressive winner on her debut here as a juvenile and was even spoken of as a potential Royal Ascot two-year-old.

Those dreams never transpired and she’s generally been found out in better company since, but the handicapper has relented and a mark of 76 is there to be exploited in what is arguably the weakest race she has ever encountered.

She fared best of those who raced up the centre when third on her previous run here in June and Richard Hannon should have her ready to rock following her break at his local track.

The fact she hasn’t yet been retired to stud suggests her connections believe she has more to offer, so it’s worth taking the hint.

7.30 Newbury – ITM Events Handicap (1m2f)

Fingers crossed Laura Bay can do the business in the concluding 1m2f handicap (7.30).

A three-race maiden at two, Laura Bay is moving nicely through the ranks as a three-year-old for David Menuisier.

She made a winning handicap debut over course and distance on her seasonal comeback in May before failing to stay an extra two furlongs here the following month.

It was much more like it from Laura Bay on her latest outing when she relished getting back to 10 furlongs to oblige at Sandown, notching a lifetime best Topspeed figure and showing a good attitude to boot.

She knows how to get the job done and will be thereabouts if she can keep building on this season’s efforts.
