Group 1 winning jockey Hector Crouch has been clocking up the miles, winning at four different tracks in the week, and is back with kwiff to look at his weekend rides at Doncaster, Newcastle and Ffos Las.
Hector Crouch: Amongst the Winners
It was nice to make up for the disappointment of Ascot with a few winners in the week. I had to wait until the lucky last at Newmarket to score on Saturday, but Allonsy made the long trip up to Pontefract worthwhile at least by winning the feature listed race for Ralph Beckett and owner/breeder Kirsten Rausing.
She did it nicely, being really game throughout and winning black type is what the game is all about, especially for breeders, so it was nice for the filly to get rewarded. We’ll probably look at winning at group level with her this season now, with the G2 Lillie Langtree Stakes a possible for her, as she would have no issues about the trip.
Another Beckett inmate to get the job done was Cape Breton; part of a double at Salisbury midweek. The Juddmonte homebred had always threatened to be a useful sort, and he responded well to a change of tactics when making all over a mile and a half. The handicapper is probably going to have his say for him winning by six lengths but he is going the right way and remains one that could enjoy a fruitful second half of the season.
Hector Crouch: Doncaster Rides (Friday)
I’ve just one ride on Friday with Favorite Memory (2.20) looking very difficult to beat in the Fillies’ Maiden over a mile and a half. The well-bred daughter of Frankel found only Godolphin’s Silent Love too good last time out at Kempton and a reappearance should see making it third time lucky.
Hector Crouch: Newcastle Rides (Saturday)
It was looking like I was Chester bound with a few rides midweek, but I instead head to Newcastle on Saturday for Northumberland Plate Day and Sheradann (2.40) looking to have a good chance at landing the Consolation Race for trainer Ian Williams. He loves the all-weather and the race is tailor-made for him. I think he has a good each way chance.
Grey’s Monument (3.45) is in that inbetween territory of being likely out-classed in pattern company, or carrying a lot of weight in competitive handicaps but he is worth a go for the 7f Handicap. I rode him here when third in the corresponding race 12 months ago and he should be fresh and well after blowing the cobwebs clear last time out at Haydock. He’s 2lb higher than that effort here last year but has a good draw and looks too big at a double-figure price.
Charlie Johnston’s L’Eagle Aid (5.30) is another to carry the burden of top weight but has been knocking on the door all season and deserves to get his head in front. He was a good second at Southwell two starts ago and a reproduction of that form – behind a next time out winner – should be good enough to go close at this level.
Hector Crouch: Ffos Las Rides (Sunday)
The long journey to Ffos Las should hopefully throw up a couple of winners with Michael Bell’s Tralee Girl (3.50) a worthy favourite to complete the four-timer in the mile and a half handicap, and Ralph Beckett’s Song Brocade (3.25) hopefully able to shed the maiden tag for Kirsten Rausing.
