A great day yesterday with Shadow Paddy and Putapoundinthejar obliging for us. The former looks to be a very good horse. The latter made a mockery of a mark of 129, under man of the moment Dan King. It’s great to finally see him arrive on the main stage. On to day five, no rest for the wicked!
6pm – Guinness Galway Blazers Handicap Chase
One of my favourite early season races. As you know, I was hoping Jalia Moriviere would get in to Wednesday’s Galway Plate; she missed out and runs here instead. Under these conditions, I feel there are couple that are better off.
Kings Hill: He had a recent spin on the flat to tune him up for this. A tactic that trainer Paul Gilligan has used in the past, with success when taking this contest with Born By The Sea. A local trainer that loves a winner here, this will have been a target for some time; JJ Slevin a significant jockey booking, too.
A Law Of Her Own: This mare makes plenty of appeal on her first outing for Emmet Mullins. The Mee family owned mare, already has fond Galway Festival memories, having tasted success over hurdles at this meeting earlier in her career.
While she may now be a veteran, it is difficult to ignore the significance of her stable debut coming at a track and festival where she has previously thrived, suggesting this race could have been the target for some time.
6:35 Guinness Handicap
The Real Screamer: A decisive four-length victory at Leopardstown two starts ago advertised his progressive profile, although he now finds himself 8lb higher in the weights. He backed that effort up with another solid display, at the Curragh, when finishing third off this mark last time, shaping better than the nine-length margin might suggests. The bare result doesn’t tell the full story, he jumped coming out of the stalls, then flew home to take third.
Versatile in terms of both trip and ground, with winning form between a mile and a mile and a half on surfaces ranging from soft to good, as well as the all-weather, he remains on an upward curve and commands plenty of respect despite operating from a career-high rating.
8:40 Rockshore Refreshingly Irish Race
A fascinating little contest, to end the day on. Although Teed Up finished around eight lengths ahead of Galileo Dame in Monday’s amateur handicap at Galway, this rematch takes place on much more favourable terms for the latter, who enjoys a significant swing in the weights that could dramatically narrow the gap between them.
Galileo Dame, hasn’t always been the easiest mare to get right. It looks like they are throwing everything at her here, to get a win. Cheekpieces on for the first time and a 7lb claimer on; she will also be hard fit.
