It’s July Cup Day at Newmarket, and John Smith’s Cup Day at York, and Dave Massey is back with his Super Saturday Tips ahead of a bumper day of flat racing.
Super Saturday Best Bets: July Cup Day Tips 2025
Super Saturday Tips: Tabletalk (York 3.45)
Al Qareem is going to be popular after his C&D win here last time out, but that was a somewhat messy affair and I much prefer the claims of Tabletalk, particularly now he goes back up in trip.
He’s run well all season, beaten a short-head in the John Porter first time up before finishing second to Eydon in the Aston Park Stakes and losing nothing in defeat when a close sixth in the Hardwicke Stakes at Royal Ascot last time out, his effort just flattening out late. He won the Melrose here last year, beating The Equator, strong at the finish that day and going back up to a staying trip can only see him in a better light, you feel.
Super Saturday Tips: Run Boy Run (Newmarket 2.50)
Had been kept to 6f this season until going back up to seven for the Buckingham Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot last time out and although the form book tells you he was only ninth, that doesn’t really tell the whole story. In a race dominated by those drawn high, he did best of the three that raced far side from the low numbers, finishing nicely clear of the other pair.
Three times a winner at 7f in 2024, including over C&D last August, his form this season can barely be faulted, in the frame in quality handicaps at Newmarket and Newbury before that respectable Ascot effort. Plenty to like about his chances today.
Super Saturday Tips: Big Mojo (Newmarket 4.35)
Big Mojo (4.35) came onto my radar for the July Cup after a luckless effort in the Commonwealth Cup, one where he got no run at various stages when he needed one and whilst some luck is always going to be required with hold-up types, it wasn’t just the race itself that marked him out but pre-race as well. He’s normally quite highly-strung but was much better behaved here, so much so he didn’t go to post that early, despite being cleared by the stewards to do so.
A speedy sort as a juvenile, he showed he’d trained on when successful in the Commonwealth Cup Trial back in April on his seasonal reappearance, and lost nothing in defeat when a close fourth in the Sandy Lane at Haydock either (again, somewhat luckless in the run late). He needs to step it up again, but I think he has it in him to do so, particularly if he can behave himself pre-race again.
