Super Saturday Racing Tips: Cambridgeshire Day at Newmarket 2025

Saturday Racing Tips

Dave Massey was on song Thursday’s opening day, and is back with Newmarket Racing Tips all 3 days of this year’s Cambridgeshire Meeting. Read his preview every day this week from Newmarket, exclusively for kwiff.

Saturday Racing Tips: Cambridgeshire Day 2025

Blue Storm (2.05) would have needed his comeback run here at Haydock after having the previous 11 months off the track, but there was just about enough in the run to suggest he retains his ability and having won this corresponding race last year, he’s probably been lined up for another crack at it today.

Saturday Racing Tips: Blue Storm (2.05)

Some of his form reads very well in light of what those behind have done, not least a second in the Palaceofholyroodhouse Handicap at Royal Ascot last year where he had future July Cup winner No Half Measures just behind him, and he was giving him weight as well. It’s surely of some interest to note he’s been successful second run after a break twice now, and given he goes on pretty much all ground and has a decent draw to work from, he should come forward from that initial run of the season and take a hand in the finish here.

Saturday Racing Tips: Trilby (2.40)

One final go with Trilby (2.40) this season before I start pulling my hair out completely.  He’s been steadily coming down the handicap whilst refinding his form at the same time, and although only eighth at Doncaster a couple of weeks ago, he was only beaten a length and a quarter after (again) not getting the best of runs through.

Essentially he needs a race where they go hard enough for him to fall in without having to do too much late work, and this looks an ideal set-up; drawn in stall 13, he’s got blazeaway merchants Angel Shared and Wild Clary drawn in stalls 10 and 11, plus further out there’s the speedy Ingleby Archie and Bear Force One as well. Three times at Haydock winner already, the set-up looks perfect for him to make it four.

Saturday Racing Tips: The Cambridgeshire

Let’s finish off with a couple of swings at the Cambridgeshire, which is down a bit on runners this year at just 24, but that makes it no less easy to solve. Earlier in the year, Treasure Time (3.40) went on the Cambridgeshire shortlist after his seasonal debut at Sandown when fourth to Classic, as I thought nine furlongs would probably suit him well. He needed the run that day, fading out of it only late on but he appeared to have retained all of his ability after ten months away, and it was a very promising effort.

Nothing much went right at Goodwood on his next start and the run is best forgotten about, but back on a more conventional track at Ascot last time, ran a 2¼ length fourth to Ebt’s Guard, and he finds himself 3lb better off today. That was a solid effort, and he looked on the way back to some of his better form, such as his win at York last year when he got up late over a mile to beat some very useful handicappers. Stall 21 looks an ideal place to go to work from, and I think he’ll go close.

Saturday Racing Tips: Expect Erzindajin

At a bigger price, don’t forget Erzindjan (3.40) here either. It’s been some season for Terry Kent, still getting winners and operating at a 24% strike rate, something many yards can only dream of, and he does seem to have refound Erzindjan’s mojo after just a couple of starts for him.

Fourth at a monster price in the John Smith’s Cup Handicap over 1m2½f at York on his reappearance after a year off the track, a tremendous effort, he was perhaps still feeling the effects of that when sixth to Dain Ma Nut In back over the same C&D next time out. Nevertheless, he was only beaten three lengths there and it’s still a very good run on the figures.

He’s not had any help from the handicapper but it’s worth noting that, when out in Meydan and trained by Dermot Weld, he’s got stacks of form at nine furlongs – most of it in Group company, including at the highest level – and this test ought to suit. Stall 23 of the 24 runners means it’s somewhat all or nothing as far as my two selections goes; get on and pray the golden highway is among the high numbers….
