Royal Ascot 2025 Day 5 Tips: Wild Waves (6:10) NAP
Sober looks the one to beat but you should never be scared of just one horse, and I rather fancy Wild Waves to turn him over now he finally gets a stamina test, which he’s looked like he’s been crying out for for some time now.
Twice a winner last year, beating the useful East India Dock at Doncaster on the second of them, he continued to improve throughout the season, a staying-on fourth to Tabletalk in the Melrose followed up by a very respectable sixth to Jan Brueghel in the St Leger, only beaten seven lengths and plugging away at one pace in the final stages, looking like he already wanted two miles plus.
He appears to have been working up to something this season, badly needing his first outing at Musselburgh, then a never-involved (but not disgraced) five-length eighth to Story Horse at Newmarket, and last time a drop back to 12f at Cappannelle was never going to suit. He finished last of four there, unsurprisingly outpaced but plugging on late, but again, on the figures, a solid enough effort. Bred for stamina, I’m expecting a more polished performance today.
Royal Ascot 2025 Day 5 Tips: Treanmor (2.30) – Take On
Everything has a price you back it at, and everything has a price you’d lay it at. That’s a fairly standard rule to go by when you’re having (or not having) a bet, and it very much applies here. Treanmor, a 2 million euro purchase as a yearling, made such an impression on debut, winning an easy four lengths from Vlad, barely coming off the bridle in the process. It all looks good, doesn’t it?
Hold on there, fella. Vlad has since been beaten by Rogue Supremacy at Wetherby, an okay effort on the face of it, and fourth home You Sexy Thing was only fifth at Sandown, not improving on that first effort. The time figure was only moderate – in fact, according to Timeform, just about the worst in the race today. And we’re being asked to take even money?
Royal Ascot 2025 Day 5 Tips: Purosangue (5:00) Each Way
The Kingsclere handler might have better chances of landing the Wokingham this year, but Purosangue caught the eye at Newmarket last time and strikes me as the sort that’s being lined up for a summer target, and it’s not impossible it’s this. Highly tried at both Listed and Group level for much of last year, he ran some superb races in defeat, narrowly defeated by the classy Makarova in the Coral Charge at Sandown and likewise only finding the speedy and in-form Quinault a neck too good in the Garrowby Stakes at York in September.
He was below form on soft ground in the Bengough Stakes here at the end of last year, but I’d not hold that against him. Two starts this season have shown he retains his ability, and he was not given a hard time when beaten just two lengths at Newmarket last time, Oisin Murphy having to challenge widest of all and once beaten, allowing him an easy time of it in the last 100yds. That form looks rock solid, the winner and second reproducing earlier Newmarket form, then the second (Aramram) winning and the fourth and fifth both going close next time. Form you can rely on, then, and the 14s and bigger for Purosangue look worth taking.
