Trainer Ross Burdon is Windsor bound as Seventy bids to go one better than his recent runner-up effort there.

Ross Burdon Racing: Super Seventy to Shine at Windsor

Royal Ascot week is here and the team couldn’t be in better form, with two of our last three runners scoring and our name on top of the Racing Post’s ‘hot trainers’ list yesterday. Whilst only in the early stages this years Royal Ascot has come too soon for us to have a runner there, but I would hope that, should the yard keep growing organically over the next twelve months, having a runner there next year will be a realistic target.

Ross Burdon Racing: Super Seventy

We do start this week at a Royal track, but Windsor rather than Ascot. Seventy returns to a track his built up a good record at recently, winning there last month before being agonisingly denied in a photo two weeks ago. Mrembo, who came out on top in that photo, re-opposes again tonight, although on a pound worse terms.

If both horses run to the same level, with the extra pound being carried by Rob Hornby’s mount, we would be expected to gain a measure of revenge this time around. I actually think having more horses in the race will help us, Seventy hit the front going very easily last time before thinking his job was done and gearing down slightly, handing Mrembo the opportunity to get back up.

With more opposition tonight we should be able to hang on to our horse for longer and try and produce him late, much like Jack Mitchell did when winning on him two starts ago. Jack is back on board tonight and aiming to maintain their 100% strike rate together.

Ross Burdon Racing: Week Ahead

Looking further into the week we will be determined on what we run by the weather. Both Dust Cover and High Point hold entries, at Yarmouth and Goodwood respectively, but both would need some rain to take up those entries. Dust Cover doesn’t necessarily need soft ground, but definitely wouldn’t be comfortable racing on a fast surface, whilst High Point, as he showed last week, loves nothing better than galloping through the mud.

Northcliff, who joined us recently, will likely run at Newmarket on Friday evening, although he also holds an entry at Doncaster as well on Saturday. He’s ran in some nice races in his time, including when running down Mesaafi to beat him at Ascot last year, and if we can bring him back to that sort of level it would be nice to give his owners some nice days out with him during the rest of the summer and aim at some nice pots along the way.

As mentioned, High Point won this week at Yarmouth. Dropping in trip to a mile and a half and relishing the very soft ground on the east coast after some heavy rain, High Point was sent straight to the front under Jack Mitchell, who got the fractions absolutely spot on, never seeing another horse until pulling up past the winning post.

It was a very sweet win for the team, HP can be difficult at home and our apprentice, Phoebe Edwards, does a brilliant job on him keeping a lid on his over-exuberance. High Point does have an entry in the upcoming July sale and this would have done him no harm at all for potential suitors looking for a horse like him.

Ross Burdon Racing: Royal Ascot

Switching back to Royal Ascot, one of the things I love about the meeting is how much the foreign runners and connections add to the grandeur of the week. Overpass could well get the Aussies off to a flyer, he’s ran some fine races Down Under and there’s no Ka Ying Rising against him here as there was when placing in the Everest at Randwick.
