Ross Burdon: The Diary of a Trainer, November 28th 2025 Update

Trainer Ross Burdon continues to fire out winners, with Dust Cover scoring for the team last week at Southwell. Read his latest update before a likely busy time over the winter on the all-weather.

Ross Burdon: November 28th 2025 Update

The turf season is over and the all weather season is now getting in to full swing and we couldn’t have asked for a better start to it with runners than what we’ve had this last week, with two runners and two winners since the flat racing break.

Ross Burdon Racing: Dust Cover

Dust Cover broke his maiden at Southwell last Friday evening, providing his owners, The Unlucky Rovers, with an emotional win after the loss of Night Arc 24 hours previously. Stepping up slightly in trip and returning to an all weather surface proved to be the key to an improved effort after being stuck in the mud at Nottingham at the end of October.

Dust Cover was slowly away in the one mile and three furlong handicap but travelled quite well in behind horses, Jack Mitchell never looked to be panicked at any stage and turning in Jack began to ask Dust Cover for an effort in between horses and Dust Cover responded, seemingly enjoying the hustle and bustle of running through horses and coming clear with So Alex, who was well supported in the betting making his handicap debut for the Newland/Insole stable.

This was a pleasing effort from Dust, by far his best since his debut, and hopefully he can go on from this now and there is hope he may improve again as he’s still a very mentally immature horse.

Ross Burdon: Ernies’s Valentine

On Tuesday at Wolverhampton, Ernie’s Valentine and Phoebe Edwards continued their love affair, winning together for the second time in their last four starts, with a second and a third place sandwiched between the wins. Ernie is an old legend, soon to be seven years old and he’s found a new lease of life whilst Phoebe has been riding him, having looked like he might be falling out of love with racing in the summer.

For someone riding only their second career winner Phoebe was very cool on the horse, waiting until turning in to ask Ernie for an effort and slipping through challengers to win by what I would describe as a cozy head! Ernie will be kept relatively busy through the winter, he loves the all weather and he will go on holiday after Good Friday next year, unless he tells us he isn’t enjoying it anymore.

Ross Burdon Racing: Saturn Seven

This weekend we just have one runner, today at Southwell, with Saturn Seven making her debut for the yard having joined us in October for Edward Lynam’s yard. Saturn Seven is a five year old mare by Sioux Nation and has already won three races in Ireland over five, six and seven furlongs. She starts out for us over six furlongs, a trip I feel she is plenty quick enough for.

As a chestnut mare, she typically quite opinionated and only does things she’s happy doing, as showcased on her last start in Ireland when she almost refused to race, hopefully we don’t have a repeat of that and she can show us something to work with going forward. Alexandra Egan takes the ride and takes off a valuable seven pounds with her claim and it would be amazing if she could keep her 100% record for the yard having won on Night Arc last month.

Ross Burdon Racing: Mesaafi

Looking ahead to next week we will only have Mesaafi running before next weekend, he will go to Kempton for another London Sprint Series qualifier, having finished third in a similar race at the end of October. Mesaafi anticipated the start that day, and actually gave himself a small cut above his eye where he headbutted the gates, he tried to jump quickly and ultimately missed the break completely.

That’s not his usual style of racing and he did well to come from well off the pace to finish third behind Coul Angel, who has won again since. He’s in good form and I hope he’ll give account of himself, though he had a short break after his last run and I’m expecting him to improve from this run and ideally this will put him spot on for a tilt at the new Timeform Sprint Series final which will be run on December 18th at Chelmsford.
