There’s plenty of top class action ahead of Glorious Goodwood next week, but first there’s the small matter of King George Day at Ascot. Seven races are set to take place on ITV this Saturday and the action comes from Ascot and York. Amongst the fancies is a previous course winner looking to get back on track.
King George Day at Ascot : TALES OF THE HEART (1.50 Ascot)
This is a race that has been won by some smart fillies down the years, none more so than Lezoo who went on the Group 1 success for Ralph Beckett later in her two-year-old career. The same connections have TALES OF THE HEART (1.50) for this year’s renewal, a filly that has made a highly promising start to her career and she was given too much to do when a fair sixth in a Group 2 last time out. This track should play to her strengths and she looks worth chancing ahead of those at the head of the market.
Saturday Racing Tips: SOUL SEEKER (2.05 York)
This race has thrown up some big prices in recent years and last year’s winner, Soul Seeker, looks like decent value to go in again. The son of Oasis Dream is a big threat when he gets away on terms and fast ground over York’s five furlongs is ideal for him. He needs to put a poor run at Haydock behind him but he’s shown he retains ability this term and shouldn’t be underestimated.
King George Day at Ascot SOPRANO (2.25)
A case can be made for a few of these but the one that appeals most is Soprano who might be able to hit the high notes on Saturday afternoon. George Boughey’s filly was impressive in the Sandringham on the straight course at this venue and she didn’t get much of a run at Sandown since. A return to quicker ground should also help here and she may have been underestimated in the market.
Saturday Racing Tips: KORKER (2.40 York)
Korker ought to relish a drop back down in class after a creditable effort in Listed company at this venue last time and there’s a suspicion that a return to six furlongs could do the trick for this gelding, who has a habit of missing the break. This trip may allow a bit more time to find his stride and he’s over finishing his races off well over the minimum distance.
King George Day at Ascot: BILLYJO (3.00)
Another competitive race at this venue but one that looks capable of going well is Billyjoh. This son of Mayson ran a huge race on his first try at this trip at the Royal meeting last month and there’s almost certainly more to come from him, despite a 2lb rise from the assessor. He only lost out to a well handicapped rival who was well found in the market last time and he can gain compensation here with a good draw in stall 15.
Saturday Racing Tips: KING’S GAMBIT (3.15 York)
Passenger is a short price but he’s got to give weight to all of his rivals and he might be worth taking on with King’s Gambit. He showed he was still on his upward curve at Ascot last time and he gives the impression that there’s still more to come.
King George Day at Ascot: AUGUSTE RODIN (3.40)
It’s hard to get away from the claims of Auguste Rodin and there’s an argument to say he should be odds on for this contest. He was a dual Derby winner last season before a poor run in this race but he clearly needs faster ground than what it was last season and he got back on track with a really impressive win in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes here at the Royal meeting last time. The step back up in trip could even be in his favour and he could be hard to get the better of.
