Looking for Newmarket and York racing tips for Saturday, October 10? Racing expert Dave Massey shares his best bets and selections from both meetings, including the Cesarewitch at Newmarket and Sprint Trophy at York.
High Fibre is Dave’s pick for the Cesarewitch, while Stoneacre Donny and Sailthisshipalone catch his eye at York. He also has two selections for the big sprint.
Dave Massey’s Newmarket and York racing tips for Saturday
15:40 Newmarket – High Fibre
High Fibre has already done readers of this column a good turn after winning the Summer Hurdle at Market Rasen in July, with James Owen quickly turning his fortunes around after leaving Harry Fry.
Since then he’s done little wrong in two subsequent starts, winning easily over two miles here in August (Owen also trained the second, the pair pulling well clear) and then bumping into the very well-treated Moon Chime at York, staying on well for second and looking ready for a crack at this marathon trip.
He’s pulled stall 1 out of the bag too, never a bad thing to draw low in this contest, and I can’t see why he’s the high price. You’re backing a fit and in-form stayer that’s showing a renewed zest for the game after a move, that will enjoy the quick ground; what’s not to like?
14:05 York – Stoneacre Donny
It was hard not to be taken with the way Stoneacre Donny dotted up over C&D here at the start of last month; you could call him the winner a long way out, and that success came off the back of a bit of a break, which had clearly done him the world of good as he’d been a disappointing (but well-backed) favourite here in July.
He lost nothing in defeat on his latest start when fifth in a hot handicap at Doncaster, constantly denied a run in the latter stages when he needed one, and beaten a shade over two lengths, looking like he had some running left in him.
A winner on soft ground at two, he’ll not mind the rain Thursday and Friday and looks sure to give another good account of himself.

14:40 York – Sailthisshipalone
Sailthisshipalone finally got his ground when he won at Ayr last month, digging deep to win by ¾l, and despite the handicapper raising him 3lb for that, he’s still a pound below where he was at the start of the turf season, so he still looks on the right side of the handicapper.
He’s hit the frame three times in four starts at York, so he acts well on the track, and his full record on good to soft or soft ground, according to Timeform, reads 16437111. Jason Hart keeps the ride, and Ivan Furtado is on a good spell, with three winners in the past fortnight.
15:17 York – Pellitory and Apollo One
I’ll take a couple for the big sprint.
Pellitory has top weight but deservedly so. A tongue-tie seems to have got him back to form, winning the Ayr Gold Cup two weeks ago and then a very unlucky fourth in the Challenge Cup at Ascot last week, constantly finding trouble from two furlongs out until the winning line, and he has to go down as a slightly unlucky loser.
All ground seems to come alike to him, and he’ll get the fast-run race he needs, with the speedy Dark Thirty drawn next door in stall 4 to take him into the race.
I have to give Apollo One another chance too. Things didn’t go his way in the Portland, and he started to come under pressure when he found a bit of trouble, so that run needs a little forgiveness.
But look at the form of his close fourth here the time before; winner Air Force One has won twice since, including the Listed Rous Stakes last week; second Corolla Point was only beaten a length and a half in the Abbaye last week; third Toca Madera won at Beverley; and fifth Gold Star Hero won a competitive handicap at Ascot last week.
That’s very strong form, and back at York he’ll have the chance to show he can reproduce it.
