Newmarket Racing Tips: Cambridgeshire Meeting 2025 Day 1

Newmarket Racing Tips

Dave Massey was on song for us last weekend, and is back with Newmarket Racing Tips all 3 days of this year’s Cambridgeshire Meeting. Read his preview every day this week from Newmarket, exclusively for kwiff.

Newmarket Racing Tips: Cambridgeshire Meeting 2025 Day 1

This 0-105 Fillies Handicap is nowhere near as classy as that sounds, with top weight Royal Velvet a full stone below the ceiling at a rating of 91, and it is, in effect, a Class 3½ handicap, should such a thing exist.  The aforementioned Royal Velvet is the class angle, but I’m not sure a drop back to 6f will work in her favour, with all of her wins coming at 7f and a mile, and she looks one I’d like to take on.

Newmarket Racing Tips: Arabian Leopard (3:00)

Angel Shared keeps on winning and by small margins, so isn’t going up much in the handicap, but I fancy Arabian Leopard (3.00) can reverse form with Angel Shared, being 3lb better off for a length defeat here in August.  Bar a poor effort in the Royal Hunt Cup where she patently failed to see the trip out, she’s run well all season and was a very easy winner over 7f on the Rowley course earlier in the season. She’s just as effective at six, and Sean Levey taking over in the saddle is no bad thing, for my money. Given her consistency, she looks a nice each-way bet at around 6-1.

Newmarket Racing Tips: Wechaad (3:35)

Distant Storm is on a recovery mission after blowing a good chance in the Acomb at York last time out, and with the winner of that, Gewan, disappointing at Doncaster next time, there’s some questions now hovering over that form. Basically, he needs to settle better here or he might find himself with little left in the finish, and 13-8 is not my sort of a price for a horse with queries against him at present.

Wechaad (3.35) won in handicap company at Doncaster last time out but did so with a lot of authority and in a very good time figure, and it might just be he’s improving quickly enough to bridge the gap to Group company today. He’ll face quicker ground here but handled it well enough at Newbury the time before when second to the smart Venetian Prince, and the in-form Roger Varian is not a man that calls his geese swans, so the entry here looks justified.

Newmarket Racing Tips: Repertoire (5:18)

This looks quite an open contest and I can make a case for plenty, but if the price is right about Repertoire on his return after a seven-month break then I’ll get involved. At first glance this looks like a probable warm-up for an all-weather campaign, but his form on turf is just as good as the all-weather, arguably better, in fact, and he has run well after long absences in the past, his record after a 100+day break reading 31104.

He’s a C&D winner and this mark is a full 13lb below his last winning one, for all that came back in 2023. Jack Callan takes another 5lb off his back, the ground is ideal, and there’s more positives about his chance than maybe first appears.
