Three horses to follow at Newmarket Races Today
The Cambridgeshire meeting at Newmarket is in full swing as the Flat season races towards its conclusion.
Day two at HQ features the Group 2 Rockfel and Joel Stakes and we’ve picked out three horses to follow on Friday’s card at Newmarket.
3.00 Newmarket Races Today – Rockfel Stakes (Fillies’ Group 2, 7f)
On the day that Sir Michael Stoute announced his intention to retire at the end of the season, it was perhaps fitting that FORMAL was an impressive winner for the legendary trainer in the Cheveley Park Stud colours.
The Dubawi filly made light of rain-softened ground to scoot clear in great style at Leicester as she backed up her success in a hot Newbury maiden in July.
She has proved herself on quick and slow ground, so the forecast easy conditions underfoot at HQ should not be a concern and heavy rain on day one at the meeting may even be in her favour.
The Rockfel was quickly pinpointed as Formal’s next target after her Leicester success, and while Ryan Moore is required to ride Ecstatic, champion jockey William Buick is a more than adequate replacement.
Another sizeable step forward can be anticipated and Formal should take some stopping.
4.45 Newmarket Races Today – Godolphin Stakes (Listed, 1m4f)
Nine runners go to post for this Listed contest over a mile and a half and Karl Burke’s Aimeric, Epic Poet for David O’Meara and John & Thady Gosden’s unbeaten Military Academy are all due major respect.
However, an each-way chance can be taken on the progressive QUIETNESS for Marcus Tregoning and Rossa Ryan.
The Bated Breath filly has been a revelation since she joined Tregoning from George Baker, winning five times and finishing second in six starts since May.
She has gone up a whopping 27lb in the ratings along the way and is well worth a chance in Listed company.
She has a bit to find on some of her rivals but the four-year-old could well pull out more and go close.
5.20 Newmarket Races Today – Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Handicap (1m1f)
Brian Meehan’s MONKEY ISLAND could go well in the finale at Newmarket on Friday.
The gelded son of Starspangledbanner was a shock winner at Newbury in novice company on his seasonal bow in May, showing a marked improvement on what he had managed in two juvenile starts.
The Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot proved too big of an ask next time but Monkey Island has been highly competitive in three subsequent runs.
The three-year-old has run well in the grade previously and he should give another good account carrying 9st 5lb and with Sean Levey in the saddle for the first time.
