Dave Massey is back with Horse Racing Tips from two massive cards at Doncaster’s November Handicap meeting, and back over the Grand National fences ahead of The Grand Sefton Chase at Aintree.
Saturday Horse Racing Tips from Doncaster & Aintree
One or two firms are giving out an extra place (or two) on this year’s renewal of the Gillies Fillies and you often find something nicking a place and outrunning big odds in the process; Invisible Friend finished third at 40-1 last year, Jasmine Joy at 100-1 was fourth back in 2022 and Vesela won this at 22-1 in 2021, so don’t be scared to throw a few quid at something that appears to have a bit to find on the figures.
Horse Racing Tips: Ciara’s Pearl (Doncaster, 3.10)
And with that, Ciara’s Pearl really doesn’t take a lot of finding as the best of the each-way pokes. A staying-on 5l fifth in this last year, she’s running herself into form, fifth in the John Musker at Yarmouth (is a couple of pounds better off with the second, Anna Swan, today) and then a good second to the in-form Annexation at Nottingham last time out. Crowd Quake, one of the most improved horses of the year, finished third that day but has since come out and won again since, giving the form a solid look.
Horse Racing Tips: Maxi King (Doncaster, 3.45)
Maxi King (3.45) finished a close eighth in this last year, doing some good late work, and is a couple of pounds lower this time around. He looks like he’s been prepared with another crack at this in mind, with just the three starts this season; he ran perfectly well at Epsom on his comeback in June and after another break, has run respectably here at Doncaster (competitive race; second won the Cesarewitch next time out) at Newcastle last time out. He’s got his ground here, and trainer Kevin Philippart De Foy has been among the winners recently. Looks a nice each-way bet at the price.
Horse Racing Tips: Grand Sefton (Aintree, 2.40)
I’ll have two goes at the Grand Sefton, if you don’t mind. Gaboriot (2.40) is the more obvious one of the pair. The Greenall/Guerriero 9yo comes back for another crack at this, having finished third to King Turgeon in the trace last year, beaten just over four lengths, but this time around finds himself a whopping 16lb better off, which simply has to bring the pair of them much closer, and indeed gives Gaboriot a very good chance of reversing the form.
He never ran as well again all season, for all we didn’t see him much after that, and the only time we’ve seen him this calendar year was when pulling up in the Eider, never getting into the race. Some stronger headgear is now reached for and maybe catching him fresh is the key, given his record after a break is a good one.
Jet Plane (2.40) is a bit less obvious, but maybe not that much less. He put in a super round of jumping when second to Gracchus De Balme in the Foxhunters here, and looks on a fair mark back in handicap company. He warmed up for this with a run at Worcester in September, not beaten that far after not being given a hard time either, and the ground should be ideal; he doesn’t really want it that deep, and Aintree has a couple of drying days in store before Saturday.
