Horse Racing Friday: 3 Horses For That Friday Feeling

Horse Racing Friday: Ayr and Newbury, Sept 20th

There are a couple of interesting cards at Ayr and Newbury on Horse Racing Friday and we provide three selections in a bid to kick off the weekend in style.

Horse Racing Friday 3.05 Ayr – British EBF Stallions Harry Rosebery Stakes (Listed, 5f)

Coto De Caza was well fancied for the Group 2 Flying Childers at Doncaster last Friday before her withdrawal and makes plenty of appeal in the Listed Harry Rosebery Stakes at Ayr.

The Simon and Ed Crisford-trained filly has an entry in the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes over 6f next weekend, but looks all speed and came within 0.09secs of the 5f juvenile course record at Goodwood when an impressive winner of Alice Keppel on her previous outing.

She got the job done in spite of a big market drift and getting messed about at the start while also racing keenly.

This race is weaker than the Flying Childers and this ground-versatile filly sets a clear standard on Racing Post Ratings.

Horse Racing Friday 4.05 Newbury – Dubai Duty Free Cup Stakes (Listed, 7f)

Lake Forest is undoubtedly the one to beat in the 7f Listed contest at Newbury, but the ground may not be quick enough and he will need conditions to keep drying out to show his best.

The preference is for Nostrum, who goes on any surface and is the highest-rated horse in the line up anyway.

7f could be a nice trip for Nostrum, who produced a solid effort at the distance when narrowly beaten in the Criterion Stakes on his first start following a gelding operation when last seen.

He’s subsequently been sent for wind surgery and been given an 83-day break, so he might not have been right that day anyway, and Sir Michael Stoute is an encouraging 31 per cent with horses running for the first time after the procedure. Nostrum remains lightly raced for his age and can continue the good form of the yard.

Horse Racing Friday 5.15 Newbury – Fitzdares Handicap (1m2f)

Bigbertiebassett has slipped to an excellent mark and has a fine chance in the concluding 1m2f handicap at Newbury on his best form.

The son of Almanzor was second to the top-class Rosallion in a novice on his sole start at this track despite 6½f clearly being too sharp behind that speed merchant.

That was a highly encouraging debut and connections decided to unleash him in a red-hot running of the Pat Eddery Stakes on his third run after looking good when scoring at Doncaster.

He hasn’t quite hit the heights for William Muir and Chris Grassick since leaving Tom Dascombe, but remains dangerously unexposed over middle distances, and has shaped better than the result the last twice.

He didn’t see out his race after encountering a wide trip at Doncaster before contributing to an overly strong pace on taxing ground at Goodwood. Off bottomweight and returned to a less demanding surface, Bigbertiebassett can bounce back.
