Classic-winning jockey Hector Crouch sits down with kwiff to discuss his upcoming return to the saddle on Friday at Salisbury, and his ride aboard Irish Oaks winner You Got to Me in Saturday’s St Leger at Doncaster.
Hector Crouch Jockey: Back in Action
The suspension is just one of those things, which comes with the job of riding and the frustration hasn’t really kicked in until this afternoon’s card at Doncaster. I would have been riding Paul and Ollie Cole’s King of Bears (2.25) in the big sales race, and Oxford Comma for Ralph Beckett (3.35) in The Park Hill Stakes. The latter in particular is a really nice filly, who I won aboard here last time out. She should stay the extra trip, and has a great chance under Rossa (Ryan).
Hector Crouch Jockey: Salisbury Rides
I am back in action on Friday at Salisbury, with five good chances starting with Square D’Alboni (3.15) bidding to defy a penalty in the opener. We thought a lot of him before he ran at Doncaster, and he duly made amends from that effort when scoring nicely last time out at Epsom. He can be a bit tricky but he picked up well when I asked of him. He’s a nice horse, but it looks on paper a competitive affair.
Sandtrap (4.58) is a lovely filly, who is well-related to some pretty useful horses, which reflects her price tag. We think a lot of her at home, and think she has the potential to be a nice filly. Connections also saddle Valvano (5.33) in the Novice Stakes over a mile and a quarter, who is back after a bit of a niggle.
He ran a blinder when second to subsequent 2000 Guineas winner Notable Speech at Kempton, which shows you the level of form he is capable of. He is a horse we hold in the highest regard, and think he could be a very nice horse over ten furlongs.
Phoenix Nights fans will be hoping Ray Vonn returns to the form that saw him win really nicely at York when I managed to find a passage to score over six furlongs. It didn’t go right for him last time out in The Great St Wilfred consolation race, but with a bit more cut in the ground and a bit better luck in-running here’s hoping he gives a better account.
Hector Crouch Jockey: St Leger
You Got To Me runs in Saturday’s St Leger, and I’m hopeful she’ll stay the extra couple of furlongs. I mentioned to Ralph after she finished 4th in The Oaks that we should work backwards from Doncaster, and it’s worked out well with her runs at Ascot, The Curragh and York thereafter.
She has improved with every run and has that bit of class you need to win a classic. She is the only Group 1 winning 3yo in the field and hopefully has that bit of speed that can see her get the better of some classy inmates from Ballydoyle. Her half-brother stays very well and Ralph can’t get them ready for the job – see Simple Verse – I’m very hopeful.
Elsewhere on the card, I’m riding Rumstar in The Portland Handicap for Jonathan Portman who will like the unique five and a half furlong trip, and New York Minute on debut, who cost 400,000 guineas at the sales. Both look to have good chances, but it’s You Got to Me who I can’t wait to sit aboard again!
