Hector Crouch: Probing can make her mark on Newmarket debut

Hector Crouch Weekend Rides

Jockey Hector Crouch reflects on another successful week in the saddle and looks ahead to his Newmarket ride on Saturday, where promising debutant Probing has impressed him at home. He also shares his thoughts on his Friday rides at York.

It was another good week with winners at Salisbury, Wolverhampton and Ayr – although the Wolves dead heat was a bit of a tight one and I did think I’d been done right on the line. I’d have taken a share of the spoils crossing the line.

I’m up to York for what should have been three rides this afternoon, but Noble Raider is unfortunately a non-runner in the 5f Nursery.

It’s left to Beagle Bay (1.30) and Glory Road to hopefully do the business, with the former my best chance of a winner all weekend.

York: Beagle Bay and Glory Road

Beagle Bay was a non-runner a few weeks ago with the ground just a little too quick, but he should be fine at York on the forecast good-to-soft going. The form of his latest Sandown success has worked out fantastically, and his form overall looks pretty strong.

My other runner is Glory Road (2.40), who should have no issues whatsoever with the ground or the trip over a mile and three quarters.

He’s up just 5lb for that last-time-out success, but I think he was value for a bit more and just idled whilst in front. He should go well, but I’m a bit wary of Ralph’s other runner Tierra Del Torro – who I rode to finish third in the London Gold Cup and could still potentially have more to offer.

Newmarket: Probing (4.15 Saturday)

I’ve got one ride at Newmarket on Saturday with the debutant Probing (4.15) for trainer Ralph Beckett.

She’s a well-bred filly, with her dam being Group class when trained by Henry Candy. She’s worked well at home and has already had an away day.

She’s galloped well already, and goes there with a good chance.
