It’s been another busy week for jockey Hector Crouch, who is back from riding another five winners in the week, to remain four winners clear at the top of the All Weather Flat Jockeys Championship. Read his latest thoughts in his exclusive kwiff column below.
Hector Crouch: More March Winners, March 7th 2025
After the relatively quietness of February, it’s been nice to be amongst the winners again with successive doubles on Monday and Tuesday at Wolverhampton and Southwell. All four winners were trained by James Owen who continues to be in great form over the winter. February was a bit of a quiet month, but there was a lack of racing, so numbers were going to be down.
Hector Crouch: AW Jockeys Championship
I rode just 4 winners in February but the good start to March means I’m still 4 clear at the top of the All Weathers Jockeys Championship. Both Luke Morris and Billy Loughnane have had plenty more rides with me, and thankfully I’ve been able to keep up with a competitive strike rate. I know that won’t last forever though, so more winners needed!
Hector Crouch: Lingfield Debrief
Lingfield was disappointing last week, with three beaten favs on All Weather Finals Trials Day, and Good Banter probably the one who comes out with the most credit. It’s almost impossible to win when drawn 12 of 12 around there, but he performed with credit and only lost by four lengths.
Moon Over Miami was very disappointing and it’s back to the drawing board for him. We stepped him up in trip thinking he had plenty of stamina but we’re all still left scratching our heads a bit. I’m not sure whether he’s in love with the all weather, but regardless the winter hasn’t gone the way we wanted for him.
Hector Crouch: Just Like Magic
Chelmsford is our destination on Saturday with three rides and Just Like Magic (6.30) for the Owen Burrows yard. He shed the maiden tag at the fourth time of asking last time out at Lingfield when showing plenty of speed over the minimum trip. He’s gone up just 3lb for that success but is unexposed and should be open to much further improvement. He has a habit of being a bit keen, so hopefully so there’s plenty of pace in the race.
Hector Crouch: Saturday Rides
Doves of Peace (7.00) is the outsider of the field for the 6f Handicap but is well-handicapped on the best of his form when with former handler Michael Bell. I was on board when he landed a course and distance handicap back in August, and he’s returned to his last winning mark. Irrelevant (8.30) has a lot to do on the best of his recent form but is now a stone below his last winning mark and could be potentially chucked if rediscovering his love of the game again.
I made the long trip to Newcastle on Thursday evening, which proved unfruitful due to the favourite bumping into Overnight Oats before loaded into the stalls, and him being far too free and buzzy beforehand as a result. Nevertheless, I’ll be back there on Monday for a couple more rides hopefully for James (Owen) again. Fingers crossed for better luck this time!
