The curtain comes down on the summer flat season, with it being another step in a positive direction. There was no Group 1 success like last season however, Cape Orator was a standout, and bagged two valuable sales races over in France. He looks a nice horse to go to war with next season, and is one of several nice horses I will hopefully get to sit on next year thanks to Ralph Beckett and Valmont.
Doncaster Races: Avispado
October was another good month too, riding just one shy of a personal best with 18 close behind last year’s 19 winners in December. I miss out on a ride in The November Handicap, but there’s three good rides starting with Avispado (12.15) in the first division of the 6f Maiden.
The well-bred colt comes from a smart family, and wouldn’t mind getting his toe in based on pedigree. Runners from the David Menusier yard tend to improve from first to second run but taking the favourite out it looks a a wide open affair and he should run well.
Doncaster Races: Stop the Cavalry
Montassib should take all the beating in the Listed Wentworth Stakes, based on his Gp 1 success in the Sprint Cup at Haydock but if doesn’t run to his rating then it’s a wide open affair and we’re hoping Stop The Cavalry (1.25) can nick a bit of black type.
She was well beaten in the Gp 3 Spectre Stakes at Doncaster’s St Leger Meeting but bounced back to form when beaten less than two lengths back in listed company last month over in France. She didn’t stay a mile that day and will be much better suited with the drop back in trip of 6f. It’s a competitive race but she will love the ground and we’ll hopefully run into a place.
Doncaster Races: Perfect Your Craft
Another that is a big prices to nick some black type is Perfect Your Craft (3.10) who was back to winning ways under Rossa (Ryan) last time out at Newmarket over a mile and a half. The drop back in trip won’t bother her, she was a winner here over course and distance earlier in the season, and she continues to go in the right direction. With a bit of juice in the ground, she’s a dangerous filly.
