Jockey Hector Crouch is back talking to kwiff, looking at this weekend’s rides upon his return at Southwell on Saturday. Read his exclusive preview below.
Hector Crouch: Weekend Rides, Feb 22nd 2025
It’s been a quiet week with the Restricted Riders taking centre stage and us other jockeys left with not much to do. There used to be a week in March where us flat jockeys would get a week off, but we’re now on standby in case of the big freeze. I’ve still been riding out, including a few nice 2yos, and it’s made me even more excited for the new turf season.
There’s a busy week in store, with plenty of rides at Wolverhampton, Chelmsford and Kempton – but starting with three rides at Southwell tomorrow on Winter Derby Day.
Hector Crouch: Hiya Maite (2.40 Southwell)
To say he has a lot to do would be something of an understatement, needing to find 20lb of improvement on what looks a strong line-up on paper for the 5f Listed Stakes. Nevertheless, he’s been in good form over the all-weather, including placing on his last two starts in competitive handicaps, and hopefully he can continue to progressing and maybe sneak into a place.
Hector Crouch: Run With It (6.00 Southwell)
Run With It is easily my best chance of the day, and can hopefully make it second time lucky in the maiden over an extended mile. He’s got a nice pedigree, with plenty of speed in there, and desperately needed the run when fourth on debut last month at Wolverhampton. I won the race that day on a nice horse of Michael Bell’s, who has won subsequently – and that looks the strongest form in the race. With further progression likely, Run With It should be very hard to beat.
Hector Crouch: Cousin Shay (6.30 Southwell)
Cousin Shay has gone up 20lb this winter for winning three times since joining connections and sneaks into the foot of the weights fo the Mile Handicap. This will be the stiffest competition he has yet to face but he’s been in great heart the last few months and will hopefully continue to improve.
