Hector Crouch has trips to Newmarket and Haydock upcoming this weekend – read his exclusive weekend preview in his latest kwiff diary.
Hector Crouch Weekend Preview, August 7th 2026
I’ve got a good book of rides on Friday touchwood, including a couple in the famous silk of owner Jeff Smith, on what might prove to be a fruitful trip to Haydock this evening.
Weekend Preview: Friday at Haydock
The Ed Dunlop trained Golden Caviar (5.43) may have it all to do in the opening Novice Stakes over a mile and a quarter, against two other potentially very nice horses. Tropical Sands looks a nice one for His Majesty The King, meanwhile recent Yarmouth winner Ancestor looks hard to beat under the penalty. Golden Caviar made a pleasing debut at Newmarket, and looked in need of the run last time out at Wolverhampton. Fingers crossed he continues to progress stepped up in trip.
It’s been a long time since Dance a Jig (6.53) made his racecourse debut in The Brocklesby at Doncaster’s Lincoln Meeting, and he looks to have found a good opportunity to shed the maiden tag at the fourth time of asking when making his handicap debut this evening.
He showed a good attitude when second on debut, and would have probably won, despite interference on his first trip to a racecourse, and was a bit unlucky to bump into a 100+ rated horse when second a few weeks later behind Adaay of Scarlett at Ascot. You can put a line through his run at Royal Ascot, when upped to six furlongs for the Windsor Castle Stakes. Back down to the minimum trip and from an opening mark of 88 he could be ahead of his opening mark.
The Andrew Balding yard have got stuck into Arthurian for the Maiden Stakes over a mile, wit the once-raced son of Camelot backed into odds-on to make it second time lucky this evening. Nevertheless, I’m keen to sit on Charlie Johnston’s nicely-bred Skylar (7.28) ahead of this evening’s first day at school. The yard can ready one first time out and he looks to be a nice horse based on his pedigree.
Another horse well-backed has been Karl Burke’s Syndicale, who bids to defy a penalty after his winning debut last month at Wolverhampton. He was incredibly green that day but showed a good attitude to land something of a touch, but I’m not sure what he beat that day. My filly meanwhile Silver Sovereign (8.03) made a pleasing debut when second last time out at Salisbury on ground that was probably softer than ideal. She’s entitled to come on for that run and, with normal improvement from his first to second race, should be going close.
Invincible Ruby (8.38) has been a revelation since getting herself race-fit at the start of the season, winning twice around Carlslie and placed in handicaps at Pontefract and York. She’s up 8lb for that series of runs but is clearly in good heart and is a filly that hopefully continues to improve.
Weekend Preview: Saturday at Newmarket
My first of two rides on Saturday is Rhodes Runner (2.30) who has a bit to do ahead of the 7f Nursery. She disappointed last time out at Doncaster when hampered but prior to that had run well when second on his penultimate start at Kempton under James Doyle. He might have a bit to find against some unexposed types.
You’d be surprised if Castle Rock wasn’t a warm favourite for the 7f Handicap, winning his last two and potentially unexposed for Godolphin. It’s interesting to see him in first-time head-gear but regardless, I’m happy to get the ride on Arctic Dawn (3.40) bidding to concede weight all round under ten stone. He bolted up at Doncaster a few starts back under similar conditions and despite a rise in the weights looks set to run well once more.
