Dave Massey’s Glorious Goodwood 2025 Tips
Glorious Goodwood 2025: Seven Questions (3:05)
More likely winners for sure, but I cannot let Seven Questions (3.05) go unbacked at 66s and bigger. Let’s get the negatives out of the way. He was stone last in this last year, but the saddle slipped so that’s very easy to forgive. He’s not won since taking the 2024 Palace House Stakes at Newmarket and his yard aren’t in a lot of form (although a couple have run well at big prices at Goodwood this week).
Right, now the positives. He’s only been with Robert Cowell since the start of this season, and after badly needing his first two starts, there’s been some signs of life back in cheekpieces as of late, firstly when fourth in a little handicap at York but then, returning there for the Listed City Walls Stakes last month, was only beaten three lengths by Washington Heights, running his best race for some time.
He has soft and heavy ground form; fifth in Group 3 company at Newbury last September, beaten 2½ lengths, twice a winner on good to soft early in his career and he does (slowly) appear to be working his way back to form. There’s clearly plenty to take on trust, but for the price, there’s more than enough upside.
Glorious Goodwood: Spirit of Farhh (3:45)
I cannot believe the 25-1 about Spirit Of Farhh is going to last much beyond Friday night; surely goes off much shorter, and to me anything north of 12s is worth considering. Three runs on good to soft and heavy ground as a 2yo saw him finish in the frame twice and then on the heavy ground at Newbury, plough through it for a ready win (well backed); this season, after badly needing his first start, he ran perfectly respctably on good to form, twice, but once again when encountering a bit of cut, ran out a ready winner at Newmarket a fortnight ago (again, well backed).
He clearly saves his best efforts for when there’s a bit of cut about and whilst a 6lb rise for that win looks enough, his proven ability on the ground and the fact he’s still improving both mean he has to be a player here. Two winners already for Eve Johnson Houghton this week too; this could be a third.
Glorious Goodwood: Miletus (4:55)
I’ll throw a couple of quid at Miletus here, as 33-1 looks a big price. He won his novice on soft ground at Windsor (Timeform actually called it heavy) and that form has worked out well over time, and then found the Golden Gates Handicap at Royal Ascot on quick ground too much for him. And that was his last start of 2024, so there was clearly an issue.
He returned in May of this year, badly needing the run at Sandown (and almost came down in interference, forget the run), but it was a lot better at Kempton last time, finishing a 3½ length fourth to Sky Safari. There were still things there that needed ironing out, he did carry his head a little awkwardly under pressure but all the same, it was a step forward. The handicapper has dropped him another couple of pounds for it and back on softer ground, it isn’t impossible he takes another step forward today.
