Why the 2025 Flat Season Will Be Remembered
The 2025 flat racing season will live long in the memory due to its strong classic fields, which saw many comprehensive victories from racers who dominated on their home turf, to results that challenged early assumptions.
High-rated juveniles, such as Gewan, HLieplan and Constitution River had notable moments, and there were an abundance of big races that contained unexpected moments.
Moment One – Breakthrough Stars Announce Themselves
Many flat racing breakthrough horses stamped themselves as stars to follow in this campaign, with commanding wins that would shape the narrative of a year of quality potential.
Emerging Talent With Early-Season Impact
In terms of emerging talent, the 2025 season was full of juveniles who showed early speed and promise. Gewan made an early-season impact when making a winning debut in a Newbury novice, later following that up in the Acomb Stakes, performances that showcases his sharp speed and marked him out asone of the leading juveniles of the year. Although he briefly faltered in the Champagne Stakes on soft ground, he ultimately confirmed his class by landing the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes and cemented his place among the elite two-year-olds of the 2025 season.
Lieplan also made a promising start by making excellent times at York, managing to reel in the front-runner Rock on Thunder. Constitution River also impressed with dominant displays up front and an 18th total success.
Moment Two – Classic Contests That Changed the Landscape
Classic performances shaped divisions in the 2025 season and highlighted standout three-year-olds.

Mid-season highlights were defined by one of the season’s biggest shocks when Qirat, sent off at 150/1, defied expectations to land the Group 1 Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood. Silence fell as the Juddmonte silks crossed the line first, with the perceived ‘wrong horse’ claiming the feature race of the Qatar Goodwood Festival. Having been expected to act as a pacemaker for the favourite Field of Gold, Qirat and jockey Richard Kingscote instead stole the £600,000 prize for trainer Ralph Beckett and owner Prince Khalid Abdullah.
No Half Measures was another standout, giving former Champion Jockey Richard Hughes his first Group 1 victory as a licensed trainer by winning The Darley July Cup at 66/1 on Newmarket’s July Course.
Moment Four – Champions Day Standouts
The Champions Day at Ascot was a defining moment of high drama, with thrilling moments such as Powerful Glory (200/1), who came up with an astounding victory to beat the favourite Lazzat (2/1) in a breathtaking finale.
