Dave Massey’s Fantastic Friday Tips: Glorious Goodwood 2025

Fantastic Friday Tips Align the Stars (1:20)

Align The Stars has long been a favourite of the column and after a few warm-up efforts to blow the cobwebs away (and come down a pound or two in the handicap) he gave notice his turn wasn’t far away when seventh in the Ascot Stakes at Royal Ascot, beaten under three lengths at the death.

He stayed on in game fashion there, basically looking like marathon distances were required now, so perhaps it was no surprise that he was never nearer than at the finish when dropped back to 14f at Newmarket last time, a slow start probably not helping his cause.  The booking of Christophe Soumillon, replacing Joe Fanning, in the saddle, can only be a positive with all due respect to Joe, and this looks a slightly easier task than a few he’s been asked this season.

Fantastic Friday Tips Ebt’s Guard (2:30)

There’s not a lot left in Ebt’s Guard’s mark these days and he hardly does himself any favours because of his consistency in these big-field handicaps, but he’ll get this run to suit, and it’s hard to erase the memory of how very unlucky he was here last year when he flew home for second behind Great Chieftain, not getting any sort of a run until it was too late.

He’d have got there in a few more strides, and whilst he’s considerably higher in the weights this time around, this step back up to a mile is surely going to suit after his four-length fifth in the Bunbury Cup last time around. Before that, he’d not been beaten far in the Royal Hunt Cup either, finishing second in the far-side group, and looks the each-way value from a decent draw today. Won’t be inconvenienced by any rain, either.

Fantastic Friday Tips: Kerdos (3:05)

A combination of some first-time cheekpieces, potentially softer ground and a decent-looking draw (on what we’ve seen so far this week) leads me to think Kerdos has a decent each-way chance here.  He badly needed his first start of the season at York, but ran a cracker to be beaten two lengths at Royal Ascot in the King Charles III Stakes (doing best of those drawn low) and although below that form at Sandown last time, it’s a run easy enough to forgive in the great scheme of things.

He was only beaten two lengths on quick ground in this last year, but his best effort of the season came on good to soft ground when winning the Temple Stakes at Haydock earlier in the year.  Thursdays’s rain is very much in his favour and I can see him bouncing back to form.
