Dave Massey’s Huge July Meeting 2025 Day 1 Tips
July Meeting Tips: Palladium (3:35) NAP
There’s the potential for this to get a bit messy but having said that, I expect Ryan Moore to take Palladium to the front and if he can get the fractions right, the pair could prove hard to pass.
He’s got just over a length to find with Ghostwriter on Hardwicke form, but what was noticeable post-race was how hard Palladium blew, suggesting he probably needed the run more than it looked, and that despite having had a warm-up at Goodwood earlier in the month (Military Academy just ahead of him). You’d like to think he’ll strip fitter for that, and he looks the value shout here, given how little there is between the front three.
July Meeting Tips: Marchogion (3:00) Each Way
There’s a lot of pace among the high numbers here and it’s possible something like American Style or Azure Zain might slip away and not get caught, but the overall impression is that they’ll go very quick here, and something that can sit in behind can nail them late.
Marchogion was well backed to score at York after a ready length win over the aforementioned American Style here on the Rowley Mile first time up, and he looked like a horse well in front of the handicapper on that. What happened at York is a mystery to all, with no reason proffered by connections for his very disappointing effort, but it was basically too bad to be true, and he’s far better judged on the Newmarket form. With the Andrew Balding yard having winners for fun at the weekend, he looks a nice each-way price from a good draw to bounce back to form.
July Meeting Tips: Parole D’Oro (5:20)
Parole D’Oro’s claims of winning this aren’t blindingly obvious at first glance, but he shaped a lot better than eighth in the Britannia Stakes at Royal Ascot last time would suggest, and this stiff mile should suit him well. Before Ascot he had the right sort of profile, improving a bit with each run, and his second to Terroom at Thirsk the time before was given a shot in the arm when the winner took the Betfred Silver Bowl Handicap at Haydock on his next start.
At Ascot Parole D’oro encountered all sorts of traffic problems and was all but last with two furlongs to go, but Callum Sheppard picked his way through the pack to finish off strongly on him for eighth. There’s plenty more to come, you feel, and stall 1 is, historically, a decent draw to work from here, throwing up a winner and three places from the last five runnings. He gets weight for age as a 3yo too, and all looks in place for a big run.
