Dave Massey: Ascot Bets Bets, Shergar Cup Day 2025

Super Saturday

Dave Massey enjoyed plenty of success at last week’s Qatar Goodwood Festival and is back for Shergar Cup Day, ready to take on the tough handicaps at Ascot.

Dave Massey: Ascot Bets Bets, Shergar Cup Day 2025

There’s plenty of these that can be given chances on their best form, but I’ve been tempted in by a couple and at the current prices I don’t mind backing them both, as I think the pair look a little overpriced. Great Bedwyn (2.45) was a good winner at York earlier in the season when everything dropped right for him.

Shergar Cup Day 2025: Great Bedwyn (2:45)

He needs to come with a steady run off a good pace, and with La Pulga, Candyman Stan and Houstonn all in the field, that looks fairly much a given today. He was flying a bit high on his next two starts after that but has performed with credit on his last two starts and shaped as if coming back to form at Wolverhampton last time. His only run at Ascot saw him finish second over C&D, and just a pound higher than that York win now, is back on a mark he can do some damage off soon.

Asgard’s Captain (2.45) is another that will be well suited by a good gallop, and I don’t see how he can be three times the price of Claymore here, given there ought not be a lot between them at today’s weights, Asgard’s Captain being 6lb better off for four lengths on their Newmarket run last month. They probably didn’t go quick enough for Asgard’s Captain there either, he was quite keen, but this looks much more up his street. Soft ground and a slow pace both counted against him at Yarmouth last time so stick a line through that, and 16-1 and bigger looks well worth a play.

Shergar Cup Day 2025: Fransico Piece (3:20)

The big question to ask with Francisco’s Piece (3.20) is whether he’s fully trained on or not, but after his York effort last time out where he finished midfield from a poor draw, I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt at 20-1 and bigger. Useful at two when there was some dig in the ground, placed twice at Listed level towards the end of the season, he looked in need of the York run to blow the cobwebs away after a short break and whilst I’ve no doubt his season is being geared up towards an autumn campaign, that doesn’t mean he can’t go well here.

He has a potentially good draw in stall 11 and Karis Teeton to do the steering, both of which are positives, and at the price I can get involved. One to have on your trackers for the latter half of the season, whatever happens here. Summer’s nearly over, you know….

Shergar Cup Day 2025: Ebt’s Guard (4:30)

When it comes to giving out the rosettes for consistency at the end of the year, there had better be something waiting for Ebt’s Guard (4.30), who has become one of the most reliable handicappers about and was possibly a tad unlucky to bump into the beautifully plotted-up Rhoscolyn at Goodwood last week.

That was basically a home fixture for Rhoscolyn, but Ascot is very much a place that Ebt’s Guard is at home at, having won here at the back end of last year and losing nothing in defeat when seventh to My Cloud in the Royal Hunt Cup. Yes, the handicapper has made life a little harder again, but he’s a straightforward ride and there’s no reason for him not to go close here.
