There are six meetings taking place across Britain and Ireland, and we have 3 horses to make your Thursday. The highlight comes via the evening offering at Sandown Park, where there is a brace of Group 3 events including the Brigadier Gerard Stakes, while they also race on the Flat at Catterick, Lingfield and Chelmsford as well as over jumps at Market Rasen and Limerick. We have picked out three runners to try and point you in the direction of some winners.
3 Horses to Make Your Thursday – 7.07 Sandown
David Menuisier is among Britain’s in-form trainers and he boasts an eyecatching 22 per cent strike-rate (17-76) at Sandown. He could be in for a big-race success with CAIUS CHORISTER (7.07) in the Henry II Stakes over 2m. She finished ahead of Sweet William and Trueshan in the Sagaro at Ascot three weeks ago and can uphold that form.
Third-placed Sweet William didn’t quite manage to go through with his effort late on, while it was another sign that perhaps Trueshan’s glory days are behind him. Alan King’s star has something to prove on this first visit to Sandown.
Caius Chorister, meanwhile, excelled on her first attempt at this trip and was beaten a head by the 117-rated Coltrane. The Golden Horn mare flew home once she got going in the straight and she is open to more improvement over this trip.
3 horses to make your Thursday – 7.37 Sandown
The second Group 3 on the Sandown card is the Brigadier Gerard Stakes and Karl Burke’s Royal Rhyme is set to be a short-price favourite on his reappearance. He won the Doonside Cup at Ayr in September and wasn’t disgraced in the Champion Stakes at Ascot on his first foray into top-level company. His best efforts have come on softer going, however, and he lacks a prep run.
ISLE OF JURA (7.37) readily won handicaps at Newbury and Newmarket (both 1m, good) last summer for trainer George Scott before a midfield finish at Haydock in September in a contest that became something of a sprint to the line. He spent the winter/spring in Bahrain and won 4-5 starts there, most recently the Listed Al Khalifa Cup over 1m4f in March. This drop back in trip is no concern and his recent race-fitness could be key. He has little to find on ratings and looks a major danger to Royal Rhyme.
3 horses to make your Thursday – 3.28 Market Rasen
Earlier in the day, there is jumps fare from Market Rasen and GOD’S OWN GETAWAY (3.28) is fancied to get brothers Dan and Harry Skelton on the scoresheet. The six-year-old made a winning start over fences at Southwell (2m4½f, good) last month, coming clear with the runner-up, and was unfortunate not to follow up at Warwick (2m4f, good) 17 days ago when picked off late by Trapista.
The Jonjo and AJ O’Neill-trained mare has since scored under a 7lb penalty at Ludlow. Everything points to another big run from God’s Own Getaway, with Harry Skelton in cracking form this month and brother Dan being in the top-three trainers at this track over the last five seasons.
