Pep Guardiola’s side went 4-0 up at the Etihad and Phil Foden and Erling Haaland scored hat-tricks in the memorable 6-3 victory, with United making the score look a little more respectable with a couple of late goals. City were at their rampant, free-scoring and free-flowing best and they put their rivals in the shade.

City benefited from heavy investment in the early 2010s as they looked to break the established title challengers, United were always seen as the team to beat in the race for the Premier League title, and even with the investment pumped into City, the Red Devils weren’t expecting what came in October 2011. City ran riot, hamming United 6-1 at the Etihad as Roberto Mancini’s men announced themselves as a serious top-flight force.

The Citizens claimed their first title under manager Guardiola in 2017, and while United were powerless to stop them taking the prize, the Red Devils did at least delay the party. Knowing a victory would grant them an unassailable lead in the standings, City raced into a 2-0 lead in April’s clash at the Etihad, but United hit back to score three second-half goals and secure a 3-2 victory. It wasn’t enough to stop Guardiola lifting the Premier League title, but Jose Mourinho’s men did enjoy upsetting the Etihad party.

Man Utd last won the Premier League title in the 2012-13 season and their 3-2 victory at the Etihad played a pivotal role in the success. The Manchester sides were battling each other in the race for the trophy, and with the game level at 90 minutes, it appeared the pair would be difficult to split. However, Robin van Persie scored a 90th minute free-kick and United went on to draw clear from their rivals and lift the top-flight crown.

Injuries had meant that Michael Owen had been nothing more than a bit part player for Man Utd, but the former England forward delivered the telling blow in a thrilling Manchester derby in 2009. City and United were tied at 3-3 after a breathtaking contest at Old Trafford and Owen entered the field with only 12 minutes of regular time to play.
Injury time, or Fergie time as it became to be known, gave the opportunity that Owen craved and the former Liverpool striker struck deep in stoppage time to hand United a 4-3 victory.
