Newcastle bid to preserve their unbeaten Premier League record when they head to Molineux on Sunday to face a Wolves side that have endured a slow start to the campaign.
Wolves v Newcastle Preview: Magpies can take Molineux spoils
Although they haven’t been at their best, the Magpies have recorded wins over Southampton and Tottenham either side of a draw at Bournemouth to give the club an early boost in their pursuit of a European qualification place. It has been a different story for Wolves, who shipped eight goals in defeats to Arsenal and Chelsea before coming from behind to record a 1-1 draw at Nottingham Forest prior to the international break.
Wolves v Newcastle Preview: Magpies to extend unbeaten run
Molineux has been a happy hunting ground for Newcastle, who have lost just once at the stadium in their last 10 visits, and the Magpies look capable of coming away with the spoils on Sunday. Eddie Howe’s side are yet to hit their straps this season but they are unbeaten in all competitions, with a penalty shootout win over Nottingham Forest in the EFL Cup adding to their seven Premier League points.
This start has given the former Bournemouth boss a platform to build from and he will fancy that his side can overcome a Wolves team that have been leaking goals, with the Black Country outfit conceding nine times in three league outings. Max Kilman’s departure to West Ham this summer appears to have hit Wolves hard and Gary O’Neil’s troops, who have lost five of their last six league assignments at home, may struggle to contain a fired-up Newcastle.
Wolves v Newcastle Preview: Ait-Nouri a ‘Card Candidate’
This could turn out to be a feisty contest between two teams that have already picked up eight yellow cards each this season and one player that may fall foul of the referee is Wolves defender Rayan Ait-Nouri. The Algeria international has already picked up one caution this term, in the 6-2 home defeat to Chelsea, while he was booked in both meetings against Newcastle last season.
Wolves v Newcastle Preview: Jaw-dropping Joelinton
Newcastle have plenty of attacking talent at their disposal with the likes of Alexander Isak and Harvey Barnes, but there looks to be good value in backing Joelinton to get at least one shot on target. The Brazil international has been a revelation for the Magpies since dropping into a midfield position, becoming the enforcer in that part of the pitch with superb box-to-box work.
While the 28-year-old is well-accustomed to putting tackles in and doing the dirty work, he also gets forward on numerous occasions and he bagged the winner in the 1-0 victory over Southampton on the opening weekend of the season. Only Isak (8) has had more efforts at goal for Newcastle than Joelinton (3) this season. The latter has seen two of his shots hit the target and he can add to that tally at Molineux.
