EFL Weekend Championship Preview: Acca Tips
Hatters can claim first success of season
Luton have struggled since returning to the Championship after last season’s relegation from the Premier League but they may finally claim their first win over an out-of-sorts Preston on Saturday. The Hatters lost their opening game 4-1 at home to Burnley before bouncing back with a hard-fought goalless draw at Portsmouth – a match in which goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski was shown his marching orders in the opening half.
Preston will head into this match already under their third manager of the campaign and Paul Heckingbottom has a tough task on his hands to instil some confidence into the squad after losing their opening two Championship fixtures to nil. One word we’ve heard a lot from new Preston North End manager Paul Heckingbottom is ‘mentality’ since taking the job in The Deepdale hot-seat, and he has a job on his hands in getting The Lilywhites playing free-flowing attractive football.
Luton have plenty of quality going forward, including captain Carlton Morris who reached double-figures for goals in the Premier League last season, and they can capitalise on the poor form of Preston, who may still be getting to grips with the new manager’s methods.
Weekend Championship Preview: Red Hot Rovers
Blackburn managed to avoid relegation by the skin of their teeth last season but they have started this campaign in strong form, collecting four points and scoring six goals across their opening two Championship matches.
Rovers will face their second newly-promoted side of the season at Ewood Park on Saturday in the form of Oxford United and, after thrashing Derby 4-2 in their Championship curtain-raiser, they will be confident of getting three more points on the board.
The U’s almost snatched a point at Coventry in their first away match of the season – a 96th-minute winner from Haji Wright broke Oxford hearts – and that gut-wrenching defeat could hamper their chances of success this weekend
Weekend Championship Preview: Super Swans
Swansea have been the dominant force in Welsh football in recent seasons and they could once again secure the bragging rights when they host Cardiff in a South Wales derby on Sunday.
The Swans have won five of the last six derby duels against the Bluebirds and they have also taken all three points in five of the last six home encounters with their bitter rivals.
Cardiff’s chances of improving upon this poor record look slim, particularly as they have started this campaign with two defeats, failing to score and conceding seven times against Sunderland and Burnley to prop up the second tier.
