Southampton v Man Utd: Precise Premier League Tips, Sept 13th 2024

Man City v Southampton

The Premier League is back after the international break and the first game of the weekend is Southampton v Man Utd ahead of Saturday evening’s early kick-off. St Mary’s is the venue for Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off and goals look set to be on the agenda, as both sides seek an improvement to their poor starts. The Saints go in search of their first points of the season, whilst anything other than a win for the visitors will heap more pressure on Erik ten Hag.

Southampton v Man Utd: Red Devils

It’s three points from their opening three games for United, who followed up their narrow opening game success over Fulham with back-to-back defeats to Brighton and Liverpool. The 3-0 home loss to their major rivals before the break will still sting as they make the long journey down to the south coast. It was not just the scoreline but the manner of their defeat to Arne Slot’s men that will concern both the fans and the new hierarchy.

Ten Hag couldn’t have hoped for a better fixture following that game, as they prepare to face a Southampton team that have struggled on their return to the top-flight. It’s three defeats in three matches for Russell Martin’s men, with their injury-time strike at Brentford their only goal so far. They will also have to buck the head-to-head trend as well, with United unbeaten in their last 15 meetings with the Saints.

Southampton v Man Utd: End-to-End Action

Saints should think this is a good time to face United and will know that if they can grab the first goal, it will pile the pressure on the FA Cup holders. But the hosts’ brave style, playing out from the back and leaving gaps for their opposition, will mean it’s likely to be an open game.

Southampton – who normally play with two up front – failed to score in just two of 24 Championship home games last season, so the attacking threat is there. Conceding at the other end though is a big concern, with five goals scored past Saints in their opening three league games. They also let in three against Cardiff in a 5-3 away success in the EFL Cup.

Southampton v Man Utd: Brilliant Bruno

You have to go back to April 24th for the last time Bruno Fernandes scored a Premier League goal, but that wait could come to an end on Saturday. The Portuguese star bagged the equaliser in his country’s midweek 2-1 victory over Scotland and he will be keen to build on that at St Mary’s. Fernandes is still on penalties and set-pieces and that makes his price even more tempting to get off the mark for the season against Southampton.
