There is only one Premier League match on Tuesday night but it’s a great one as Chelsea head across London to The Emirates to take on title contenders Arsenal. The Gunners got their title bid back on track after their surprise home defeat by Aston Villa when winning 2-0 at Wolves on Saturday and they now top the table from Liverpool on goal difference with champions Manchester City just a point behind with a game in hand.
Chelsea are ninth but an improved run of eight unbeaten games in the league has given them a realistic chance of securing a top-six finish.
Gunners have a golden chance to stay ahead in title race
Arsenal received an unexpected boost in their quest to win their first Premier League title since 2004 when it was revealed on Monday that Chelsea star Cole Palmer could miss the game due to illness. Palmer was unable to train as his team prepared for this tough test and if he is not able to start it will be a huge blow to Chelsea’s hopes.
The Gunners will want to stay on the front foot in the title race and this week’s schedule provides them with an opportunity to turn up the pressure on their rivals by playing first. Liverpool head to Goodison Park for a Merseyside derby against Everton on Wednesday while Manchester City are not in action until Thursday when they travel to the south coast to play Brighton. Arsenal have won 12 of their 16 home games in the Premier League this season and were successful in 10 of their previous 11 league matches at the Emirates prior to their defeat by Aston Villa.
The leaders should be able to come out on top against a susceptible Chelsea defence but the Blues are blessed with plenty of talented attacking options and can be fancied to get on the scoresheet even if they lose. Both teams have scored in 13 of Chelsea’s last 16 Premier League away games, while Arsenal had conceded in three successive matches prior to their win over Wolves, so taking a home win with both teams scoring makes plenty of appeal at 2.50.
Entertainment expected at the Emirates
Goals are never far away when Chelsea are in action this season and while they have an expensive array of attackers who don’t always live up to their price tag they have been finding their way to goal regularly in recent weeks. The Blues had scored at least twice in eight successive games prior to their 1-0 FA Cup defeat to Manchester City, firing in 26 goals in that run, which culminated in last week’s 6-0 home thrashing of Everton.
The clean sheet in that game was an exception, however, as the Blues had also conceded at least twice in their previous seven matches. Chelsea’s last six Premier League outings have finished with four or more goals and that was also the case in the team’s first league meeting this season, which ended 2-2. Another high-scoring showdown seems likely at the Emirates. No team has recorded more top-flight victories with over 3.5 goals than Arsenal this season and the ingredients are there for another entertaining show from both teams.
Jackson may be Chelsea’s best chance of success
Palmer has scored an amazing 11 goals in Chelsea’s last seven games, and that firepower would be sorely missed if he cannot play or is feeling below-par. Chelsea are capable of creating chances even without their star man, though, and Nicolas Jackson is a decent price to score at any time in the game.
The Senegalese striker has scored in three of Chelsea’s last eight matches and will be disappointed not to have improved that record against Manchester City on Saturday. Mauricio Pochettino is short of alternatives up front and it may be worth backing Jackson to come good at the Emirates.
